Woooo....someone has.to get this started. Who are the best candidates for HC. I know Maine has a young coach who can recruit. Any opportunities out there.

Hugh Freeze wants to get back in coaching.

The Maine coach should be number one!

I said on twitter I'd like to see an energetic coach with defensive knowledge, emphasis on the trenches, and appreciation for all three phases of the game.

I'm pretty tired of these blowout losses on defense. This is somewhat of anecdotal (I'll investigate this further when I have the time) but I think more often or not the successful FBS teams in the northeast are those who emphasize defense as part of the culture. Teams like UCONN was in the Big East, BC with Don Brown, the Schiano era at Rutgers, etc. Even UMass (DB era and Whip+DB era) was most successful when it has had a stout defense.

I identified some defensive coordinators using the same process I used for identifying offensive line coaches. I looked at the exponential moving average of the past four years S&P/FEI defensive rankings and the exponential moving average of the change in year-over-year for the past four years S&P/FEI defensive rankings.

Alex Grinch (Wazzu/Ohio St - 39),
Brian Jean-Mary (USF - 42),
Orlondo Steinauer (Fresno State/CFL AHC - 45),
Kevin Kane (NIU/SMU - 34)

Unfortunately I don't know how energetic these guys are. Since we're basically just going through the motions right now, that's what we really need in a head coach. Technique, play-calling, recruiting... a lot of that can come from assistants. But the HC needs to have the drive, energy, and direction to lead the program.

However (and I'm trying not to be ageist) these are somewhat younger guys who are probably looking for a stepping stone HC job. That situation tends to attract high energy folks.

Oh and Alex Grinch has some New England ties. He was a defensive backs coach at UNH in the mid 2000s.

And yes Joe Harasymiak of Maine seems like another up-and-comer who matches the criteria. Maine certainly played UMass tough last year.

Don Brown I don’t think Harbaugh gets another season so he may be available.

Neal Brown at Troy would be an excellent choice but I think he’ll get a bigger offer after this season, especially after beating Nebraska.

Old friend KC Keeler down at Sam Houston I think would be a solid choice.

James Madison’s Mike Houston I think would be an excellent candidate.

Bo Pelini from Youngstown State, so so at Youngstown but never won less than 9 games a season at Nebraska.

Joe Harasymiak from Maine young up and coming HC if you want to go that route.

Former Minuteman Ben Albert deserves an interview, he’s had an excellent career.

Detroit Lions TE Coach Al Golden, former Temple, Miami Fla HC.

^ If we can get Mike Houston we should do that right now. But his contract with JMU stipulates a $500k buyout if he signs with a G5 FBS school before Jan 2020.

Golden would be a good option too. Might have been in over his head at Miami but he is a proven program builder and that's what we need. The situation he inherited at Temple is not unlike ours. I'm squeamish about giving the reins to someone who has no HC experience at the FBS level. If this next hire doesn't work out we're looking at a whole decade of futility at the FBS level.

Might be squeamish, but Neal Brown’s first HC job seems to have worked out well. And, PJ Fleck did pretty well in his first gig at western Michigan.

Have you any idea how much these guys make. Brown must at least 1 mil and probably the others do. So where does UMass get the money to pay these guys?

You think Maine pays its head coach that much? I haven't looked, but I doubt it. There are likely many good potential coaches out there that we wouldn't have to pay big 10 level salaries.

Golden would be an incredible hire - my thought on that is, does an experienced, veteran coach want to walk into such a headache? I bet he sure is comfortable being an NFL TE coach.

No one working for Matt P is “comfortable “!

There are many ways to compensate college coaches beyond just salary, see the Calipari model at UMass. Most on this list are FCS coaches so hopefully pay shouldn’t be an issue as FBS should pay more.

If we are going to be cheap then get out because the way it is now this program will be lucky to attract recruits let alone fans if it continues down it’s current road.

If they want AAC membership then pay AAC wages.

If things don't change fast, either starting to win or changing HC, we'll lose this recruiting season, and maybe the next as well.

Brown signed a new 5 year contract at $1.4M per year in Dec 16. 2 other asst. coaches at Michigan earn $1M+.

On the other Joe H. UMAINE head coach makes $153,000.
