I think that the administration has to accept a lot of the blame for the current condition of the team. They OK'd the move up to 1A without providing the necessary funding to run a first class program. They can fire Whip but where will that leave us? We will still have low limited funded program with minimum experienced coaches. Need to invest more bucks to hire better coaches.The sooner the better.

Got to find some light at the end of the tunnel. Whipple was huge mistake.. should have gone bold and young and I think this is what we will do this time around. A realistic goal is to get to the point where we usually beat Mac, SB and most CUSA teams.. Blow it up and start from scratch.

1st home hockey game is 10/6 vs. RPI.
1st home BB game is 11/6 vs. Lowell.

I'm having a hard time convincing myself that we have a football team so I'm focusing all of my attention on the above 2 sports. I'll be back when we have a new head coach. For the record, I was 100% behind Whip's hiring. It's OK to admit you made a mistake.

I disagree with everyone who say this is the administration’s fault. It’s been ten years since we’ve had a good head coach. Morris, Molnar and Whip have decimated the program. Hire the right guy and this can turn around overnight. Bamford has to make the right call this time around. The wrong guy again may completely kill our FBS program.

I agree with this. While I think there are things the administration could have done to make things better in some ways, I don't lay blame at their feet. Molnar and Morris were simply terrible hires by an AD that was in way over his head. Whipple has done some good things, but for whatever reason his worst tendencies seem to have undermined the good stuff. At this point, I believe the rumors that he's lost the room and I consider him a lame duck at this stage. I agree, he should resign and give RB the ability to recruit openly.

I don't think a good coach is going to turn us into Michigan, but I simply cannot believe we can't find a decent head coach who can field a team that could be competitive for a bowl game from time to time at the FBS level. I don't think the issue is strictly talent this season, though clearly the defense is not up to the task. I want Ryan to have a chance to bring in his own guy. If that fails, I may throw in the towel, but until that time I'll continue to believe it's not impossible. Perennially pathetic programs have been able to turn it around with good coaching. That's where it has to start.

Bamford will have to make the right call. I'm OK leaving it in his hands, it's the best shot we've got.

Morris is OC at Monmouth.

Molnar is WR coach at Idaho.

Agreed. Bamford has a pretty good track record so far in picking good coaches (at least if the early signs are any indication) for some of our other programs that were struggling. I'd like to see what does with the chance to put his stamp on the football program.

Bamford never had a say in Whipple because he was hired after the fact. He is 2-0 in the coach hiring front (McCall and Carvel). I do not know what he is waiting for, just lay the hammer down a fire him. If we go 1-11 so be it but at least we are now committing to a legitimate rebuild. However, none of what I am saying will even matter if we continue to throw nothing at this program. Again a two buck chuck FBS program will always be a loser! I think the next head coach for us comes from the FCS. Best opportunities include:

Joe Harasymiak - Maine (12-11 overall)
Mike Houston - JMU (70-22 overall)
John Grass - Jacksonville State (33-6 overall)
Neal Brown - Troy (26-14 overall) - I know wishful thinking but he goes on the board
K.C. Keeler - Sam Houston State (208-83-1 overall)

They need to do something soon before the last remaining fans of UMass football, which is pretty much everyone on this board walk away. Why I continue to follow this program I have no idea. Its an insane, irrational hope that someday we can be a winner. Here's to hoping!

Why? What indications do you see that will lead to winning? The team just lost to the #105 and 106 preseason ranked teams out of 129. What are the positive selling points both to obtain a new HC, and for him to recruit? Not much tradition, poor fan base among students, alums, and casual fans, low budget for coaches, antiquated stadium, no conference, no culture. When listed it looks like the recipe for failure.

Similar despairing comments were made about basketball and hockey, after being in the doldrums for a long time. But again, a good coaching hire can do wonders. The flip side of that is the wrong choice puts you in the hole for another 4-5 years. In any case, I see no reason UMass can't be successful with the right leadership.
