I never once believed this team had turned any kind of corner. I'm surprised they regressed as badly in this game as they did, particularly on defense, but in some ways I'm not really surprised.nighttrain777 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 11, 2017 7:30 pm Every time we think we have turned the corner, we have a game like this.
I'm glad they won, but you can't take much from this game other than a sense of relief that we don't have to again suffer the ignominy of losing to Maine; especially since this Maine team isn't nearly as good as the one that beat us several years ago. Maine dominated much of the game. For the most part, we couldn't run on them, and for a while we couldn't pass either. Ultimately it was their ill timed mistakes and turnovers that cost them the game. But for those, I think they could have beaten us.
I did enjoy the game being at Fenway, though I was surprised our tickets were on the 20 yard line. I hope they do another game at Fenway next year.

Happy with the win, but this was a poor showing against a mediocre to bad FCS team. The lack of discipline and dumb penalties continue to amaze me. Three delay of game calls, though one was intentional, unsportsmanlike conduct calls, and on and on. Special teams coverage and returns continue to be awful. I thought Maine totally gashed our defense with its running game. Play calling for the most part sucks. Whipple will be back, but if they don’t bring in an offensive coordinator, the team will continue to play to the level of its opponents. Green monster seats are the bomb for watching a football game and the State Street Pavilion event was well done...except for the $13 beers.

Sat in the loges, comfortable, even with layers. Near perfect weather except 33 degrees most of game.
Incredible amount of penalties, on both sides. Lots of chippiness. I thought that Isabella had a terrific game, as did Ford, until he re-started his old 'hold it too long' habit. Defense had some great plays, like the interception for t.d., but we also gave up some long runs.
Band was really good, near spectacular. 1812 overture plus the songs from the 5 armed services, really well done. Don't get enough credit.
Last point. All the players had "minutemen" as the player name, that's fine. But, there were no programs nor fliers that listed the players from either team. Seemed weird to me, especially since many fans were seeing UMASS for first time, it would seem.
Glad we went.

Completely agree that special teams need a lot of attention.TheInsider wrote: ↑Sat Nov 11, 2017 9:34 pm 3 observations..

Even better than the band playing the five military service songs was the formations for each song. Loved the ship moving down the field for the Navy. Really well done.

I noticed that as well, but it was because it was displayed on the big screen from way up. I've never seen UMass' formations from this angle, and it was awesome, gave me totally different appreciation for the band! They should put a camera on a drone and get shot of the formations to broadcast on the screen at McGuirk!
Agree we need to make serious improvements on special teams and o-line, and I'd support any move in that direction. If they do a search for an OC, I wouldn't mind Coen being a candidate, but I don't think we should get too fixated on him. I'd like to see if Ryan could beat the bushes and get some really good candidates. If Coen emerges from a thorough search as the best person, I'd support it, but I don't want to default to him just because of his UMass connection. IMO, UMass needs to start casting a wider net.TheInsider wrote: ↑Sat Nov 11, 2017 9:34 pm 3 observations..

I say Coen because he runs Whips offense. You can't bring in a OC that runs the read option.

I'm not sure how much of a selling point running Whip's offense is. But assuming that's a factor, I can't believe there aren't others out there who can function effectively within that scheme. I'd like to see a wide search for the best person, and if Coen turns out to be it, great. But I don't want to just default to him because he's a UMass guy. This position is too important to do that.TheInsider wrote: ↑Sat Nov 11, 2017 10:13 pm I say Coen because he runs Whips offense. You can't bring in a OC that runs the read option.
Of course we're assuming there will even be an OC position at all, so that's the first hurdle to clear.

It wasn’t pretty but not all the women I dated before getting married were lookers either.

The whipple play calling never fails to amaze. The rollout that resulted in the safety and going wildcat with time running down in the first were truly idiotic.
