This guy says on twitter that he is ours:

^ If he commits with his own tweet, what confirmation are you looking for?

Need to know he was officially offered as well as eligible?

Is an '18, so he has this year to get eligible, not that it matters for BB! He decommitted from Tennessee, so I don't think UM has evolved to the point where SEC offers a kid and UM doesn't.

There is more to a commitment than a tweet saying "I'm officially committing to..."

There are two sides. The player has to want to commit a program, and the staff at the program has to accept their commitment. The one that people in this social media age tend to gloss over is the latter. There are numerous reasons why schools will wait to accept or decline a recruit's commitment during the cycle, and until the staff accepts it, it does not mean anything.

As of right now, the staff has not accepted McClay's commitment. Therefore, he is not committed.

In recent memory this same situation arose with a couple of defensive lineman UMass was recruiting in the class of 2016. Zach Cannon from Nassau CC, and Zuriel Davis from Jackson HS in Jacksonville. Both at different points tweeted commitments to the program, but neither of those commitment were taken by the staff.

Not to single you out TBM, but I'm the guy when it comes to UMass recruiting, particularly football. I've checked with my sources, it is not yet confirmed.

Hey, it's your choice.

The staff may very well accept McClay's commitment down the line. Maybe tomorrow, maybe a month from now, maybe on National Signing Day. But right now, quarter after 10pm on 7/23/17, he's not committed to UMass.

Really intrigued to know what the hold up is here... Is it character issues? It can't be grades.

3 star player that was predicted to go to Tennessee? I would consider this a steal for UMass.

Very strange. Has to be a reason the staff hasn't accepted it yet. Power 5 interest and a one time UT commit. As they say " trust the process". We shall see.

Go UMass!

Rsox confirmed on twitter that McClay is officially committed now. Great pickup. Watched his highlight tape and was impressed with his ability to get off blocks and great angles to make tackles.

I guess TruBlu was correct and McClay knew what he was talking about when he tweeted his own commitment.

Feel free to believe whatever you like, that commitment was not official or accepted by the staff until last night when Whipple signed off on it; McClay made that announcement via Twitter prematurely.

The recruits themselves are in fact the least reliable sources of information when it comes to their recruitment. They will stretch the truth (or worse) regarding all kinds of things like who is recruitment them, where they're leaning, make announcements prematurely, etc.

McClay is a very good athlete and a solid addition to UMass' 2018 class, provided he makes it. Let's hope he does.
