Football Broadcasting/Distribution

Post by DearOleUMass » Sun Apr 30, 2017 3:02 pm

Just finished up watching AD Bamford's Facebook Live video. Looks like the end of it was cut off when he was mentioning how they would be moving forward with the distribution of game day football content now that ASN has dissolved. Did anyone see the end that would be able to fill us in on what the plans are moving forward? Last thing he mentioned was that they could potentially reach back out to NESN and work with them for broadcasting games and then the video cut off.

^ I was watching the video-chat live and it ended in the same spot, he never finished that sentence. I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up back on NESN. Either way I'm sure games will be televised (locally) as well as streamed. Whether it's going to be NESN, CSN or some other network, that's not for me to say at this juncture, but I'm pretty sure it'll be somewhere.

ASN became Stadium who will show games on twitter for free. That's one possible option.

Yes @StevieLeaves...working on that now. With ASN out, working on linear (regional/national) and digital platforms for all six home games.

the great part of ASN is they produced the game, and then distribution the feed. I am not sure NESN or CSNNE or anyone has much interest in doing this because of the extreme cost.

^ How hard would it be for UMass, themselves, to produce the games? Considering the video resources they have I think they could probably pull it off.

From what I've heard there wasn't much production going on from ASN. They relied heavily on the schools to pretty much produce them.

Sources indicate @ElevenSportsHQ will air all @UMassAthletics football home games for the 2017 season.

^ Blimey! Maybe the games will be on in Poland and Bulgaria.

It is a recent name change. They seem to have the Ivy and the Big Sky.

They do not have a Comcast channel, but they do have one on Verizon.

It might still be under the old name. It is grouped together with the Latino stations on charter. It was known most for soccer.

Also good to note that the Big Sky and Ivy retained streaming internet rights to the games. So we might still have the ability to sell the stream of our games as well as the TV broadcast deal.

Optimum (Altice) just got rid of this channel after a dispute with the new owners about fees.

We'll find out, but seems like we could keep the streaming rights and sell the streaming rights to Hawaii (one game) and/or to ESPN3 (5 games). There is relatively big money involved with Hawaii and needing one more PPV game.
Thanks - does that mean UMass could still use ESPN3 as a streaming option.

Possibly. Or UMass could sell PPV streams from their website.

I can't remember whether it was CSN or NESN+ that used to have the Ivy League games on last year-I'd assume they were picking up this feed so there might be some hope for local distribution.

What I care most about regarding broadcasting is exposure/reaching the local casual sports fan. If the choice was between NESN+ or CSN, it would be CSN as the casual sports fan may not even know NESN+ exists.

Eventually converting some of those casual fans to UMass fans.
