From Dewey: "HUBER OUT FOR SEASON — Whipple, who had previously left the door slightly open for a possible return, confirmed that senior linebacker Shane Huber would be out for the season.

He said Huber will serve as a student assistant coach and will still be a team captain. He will join his teammates on the field for the opening coin toss."
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

Is he going to petition to get an extra year? He was a 5th year senior right?

Speaking as someone who tore his knee up three times, sucked it up and continued to do Army stuff on it, and am now 46 and wishing I did things differently. My feeling is he should hang em up so he can enjoy a good quality of life when he is older. Feel really bad for him but it's not like he is going to get rich playing football. Maybe coaching is the way he can make his mark.

Speaking as someone who also did 25 years in the Army and "played through the pain", I preferred to do what I loved and be damaged in old age rather than look back as a healthy person and "wish" that I had done it...

That was my career. It was fun and it was an honor to serve, but I was also compensated for it. Maybe I'm a pussy, but after my third ACL tear, I got a permanent profile.

Well, either way Huber had a 2 page note posted on Twitter announcing his "retirement" from playing football. He will still serve as team captain and coaching assistant for this season.

Interested in getting opinions on the leadership shown by MW on this thought process. Sr DD violates team rules and does not travel to CC, depriving his team of perhaps their best defender, A week later, he is named Captain!

Ouch, man, 3 times! I've had one ACL meniscus tear and that was enough for me.

Some nerdy stuff ...

I like to follow both the ESPN Football Power Index and SB Nation's Football Study Hall breakdown. What's interesting is that neither one has UMass even in the bottom 10 nationally despite the terrible start to the season.

But there is some interesting stuff in that second link...

[*]UMass is DFL (No. 130 overall) in Special Teams play ... the biggest culprits being Field Goal Value (naturally, but only 129th) and Kickoff Success Rate (126th).

[*]UMass is in the bottom five in Starting Field Position both offensively (No. 127) and defensively (No. 128).

[*]UMass is one of the worst teams in the country, but surprisingly not the worst, in Sack Rate both overall (125) and passing downs (123).

[*]UMass is bottom 10 nationally in Run Rate on standard downs (No. 121). Oddly enough, they are much better on passing downs (No. 67).

Both ESPN FPI and Football Study Hall still project UMass to beat Ga. Southern and Maine, as well as FIU (although Study Hall hasn't added this game to the schedule). Of course, both also had Hawaii and Old Dominion as projected wins as well, so take anything with a grain of salt. But still, interesting numbers to chew on.

I am amazed that any school can be worse than we are in the field goal game!

Had to dig a little bit, but Navy is ranked No.130 ... the Midshipmen are 0-for-1 on the season, missing a 29-yarder.

So as with anything else so early in the season, I guess the data can be considered a little bit suspect at this point.
