^ Horrendous weather, but I'm glad I went. It's the only UMass road game I've been to, so it was good to see the comeback win.

I'm too lazy to check back over several pages. Is this news?

"Toledo has added 4 games to its schedule including a home and home series with Umass.
2020- vs Central Connecticut
2021- vs Norfolk State
2021- at Umass
2022- vs Umass"

^ It's news to me. I probably won't attend either game but thanks.

If I attend those games, it's a testament to the life-prolonging effect of alcohol.

I am wondering if more shifting around will happen as we now have 2 FCS games in 2021 and start 2022 with 5 road games. I am hoping there is some sort of larger renovation project in the works for 2022 or 2023.

I didn't realize that we are "operating in the shadow of UConn." :)

Isn't that article a bit misguided? I don't think we are parting ways with Gillette at all. We've moved some games and will continue to have the partnership for when it's needed. Unless something has changed?

@FBSchedules
Indiana adds home games against Indiana State (Sept. 9, 2023) and Akron (Sept. 23, 2023.

The Indiana State game replaces a previously scheduled game vs. UMass.

Interesting article in the Gazette. Not sure whether we've discussed the Missouri game at McGuirk previously, but I thought this was a good job by Josh Walfish of reporting on how it came together. https://www.gazettenet.com/UMass-athlet ... g-25045021

So UMass is suddenly a hot scheduling commodity because they're an independent? That's making the most of a bad situation!!

They are because you can schedule them basically any week of the year with flexibility unlike schools with a conference that will have 8+ weeks blacked out in a given season. If South Carolina, for example, puts UMass on their schedule for a couple years down the road they know they will be able to fit them in anywhere they have a gap in the SEC schedule.. I think it is one of the main (only?) benefits of being an Indy - unlimited scheduling flexibility.

It's not something that UMass necessarily benefits from, but Indy schools (such as BYU and ND) can also benefit from having their own media contracts. There's no collective bargaining, but they do get their full market value. They don't have to share it with the bottomfeeders of a conference.

Although now that I think of it, UMass has benefitted in a sense from arranging a media deal in that NESN picks up football in addition to basketball and hockey.

It goes along with the scheduling flexibility, but one thing that is becoming increasingly more valuable as an Indy is the ability to play regional and historical rivals. As conferences get bigger and bigger you have some schools that have difficulty playing their old rivals because they're now in different conferences. Indies also have a bit more say over their strength of schedule. You can build a "relatively" easy schedule like UMass, or like BYU you can schedule something like 6 P5 schools.

^ Yes, but how long can we continue to maximize TV revenue doing our own media packages? Long-term, a conference affiliation would provide a more predictable revenue stream. But as long as we're stuck in the Indy ranks, our AD is doing a great job of maximizing the opportunities. It certainly does not make sense to take less than seven figures or not insist on a basketball home-and-home for playing a P5 school on the road. It's amazing how many power schools have holes in their schedules that they're desperate to fill.
