Whipple, staying or going??

Post by Sam Minuteman » Mon Dec 01, 2003 2:19 pm

The more I hear the more I think if the report is not in favor of going I-A coach Whipple will be moving on. If this is the case I wish him the best of luck!!!

A blurb from TSN

UMass head coach Mark Whipple’s name has popped up in recent published reports relating to the head coaching vacancy at I-A Central Florida, which fired Mike Kruczek on Nov. 10. Whipple, who is 49-26 in six years with the Minutemen and won the 1998 I-AA national title, is known to be seeking an exit from Massachusetts, which is in the midst of a budget crisis and may downsize its program to the non-scholarship level.

THIS DOES NOT SOUND GOOD!!

George O'Leary (former GTech coach, and the guy who had to resign from Notre Dame for elaborating on his resume) is as far as I can tell still the leader in the UCF job.

Inner, I think people are anticipating a "No dice on 1-A" vote from the committee when it comes. And then next natural step would be that Whipple would have nothing to stay for if UM wouldn't upgrade...

Successful 1-AA coaches don't necessarily have a fast track to 1-A jobs. The big schools like to hire head coaches with recruiting experience at the top level, so you see more assistants from big-time schools make the move up. With a few exceptions like Tressel at Ohio State and Paul Johnson at Navy, I really can't think of that many 1-AA to 1-A moves. If UMass doesn't upgrade and Whip wants out, I think he'd be more likely to take an offensive coordinator job at a big-time program.
