St. Bonaventure (??) 47
at UMass (#1, 18-0, 6-0) 72

Marcus Camby returns to action after missing the previous four games. Ironically, it was at St. Bonaventure when he collapsed and was taken to the hospital.

Camby blocks 9 shots in the game (UMass single game high). Edgar Padilla connects on 5-7 3-point attempts. UM defense holds Bonnies to 27.7% shooting.

I was going through an old draw and found my bracket predictions from 1995-1999. Right on top was 1996 so I had to see how far I picked the Minutemen to go. I picked them to lose in the Elite Eight... but remember I think I was 11 and I didn't even live in Massachusetts.

Fordham (??) 50
at UMass (#1, 19-0, 7-0) 80

<a href="http://umasshoops.com/cgi-bin/frameset. ... sHoops.com" target="_top">http://umasshoops.com/games/1995-96/0130fordham/</a>

Fordham's first visit to UMass as a member of the Atlantic 10. Marcus Camby scores 24 points in 24 minutes of work, then the reserves take over. Edgar Padilla hands out 10 assists. Charlton Clarke scores the first 4 of his 1041 career points. He missed most of the season so far with the broken foot.

UMass (#1, 20-0, 8-0) 59

<a href="http://umasshoops.com/cgi-bin/frameset. ... sHoops.com" target="_top">http://umasshoops.com/games/1995-96/0201temple/</a>

Marcus Camby blocks 9 Temple shots, tying the UMass record, which was established exactly 5 years earlier by Harper Williams. With the defensive effort, UMass holds Temple to 20.6% shooting.

Speaking of the 95-96 team, did anybody catch Behler's halftime interview with Dana Dingle last night? Bob was supposed to run a taped interview with softball coach Elaine Sortino, but Dingle was in the building and they made a last minute change.

Anyway, back to revisiting...

10 years ago yesterday (I'm a day late again)...

UMass (#1, 21-0, 9-0) 78
at Xavier (9-9, 5-3) 74
Overtime

<a href="http://umasshoops.com/cgi-bin/frameset. ... sHoops.com" target="_top">http://umasshoops.com/games/1995-96/02041996.htm</a>

Massachusetts welcomes Xavier to the A-10 in their first meeting as league opponents. Edgar Padilla hits a 3-pointer to tie the game late in regulation, then steals the ball from Gary Lumpkin on X's last possession in overtime to seal the victory.

Camby scores 26 to lead all scorers, Bright adds 21, Weeks snares a game high 13 rebounds. All 5 Xavier starters score in double figures, but their bench only adds 1 point.

UMass (#1, 22-0, 10-0) 73
Fordham (2-17, 0-10) 47
at Madison Square Garden, New York NY

A one point game at the half, and only a three point lead for UM with 15:03 to go, Mass goes on a 20-2 run to put the game away. Camby led all scorers with 26. Bright added 12. Dingle grabs 8 rebounds.

UMass wears the alternate black road uniforms. I remember some of Fordham's looked pink after they went through the wash.

Temple (12-10, 8-3) 55
at UMass (#1, 23-0, 11-0) 84

Carmelo Travieso is on. He connects on 8 3-pointers, which ties the school record, and scores 26 overall. From a Shaughnessy column:
"I did a clinic once in Boston," said Celtic scout Rick Weitzman. "I was in a rhythm and making my shot pretty well and I said, 'Any shooters here? Anybody think they can shoot with me?' All the kids pointed to Carmelo. He was just a young teen-ager then. But the way they were all talking, I knew I didn't want to go up against the kid."
All UM starters go for double-figures. The Minutemen lose the rebounding, but if you hit 51.6% of your shots, there aren't many to be had. "I'm not sure if we can play better than that," said John Calipari.

La Salle (??, ??) 53
at UMass (#1, 24-0, 12-0) 70

La Salle's first visit to the Mullins Center as a member of the A-10. The Explorers go into halftime with a 28-20 lead. Calipari gets T'd up at some point during the game. Whatever did it, UMass wakes up in the second frame, outscoring La Salle 50-25.

Seldom used reserves get some time: Ted Cottrell grabs 4 rebounds in 4 minutes, and Andy Maclay hits a shot.

UMass (#1, 25-0, 13-0) 74
at Virginia Tech (#10, 19-3, ??) 58

The Minutemen hit the road to face the Hokies in their first meeting as (brief) Atlantic 10 rivals. VA Tech was only in the league for 5 seasons.

Marcus Camby owns the spotlight, hitting 14-22 from the floor, scores 31 points, snares 10 rebounds, and blocks 5. Donta Bright adds 19. Hokie ace Ace Custis (who made the A-10 First Team that season) was held to 3-13 shooting and 7 points.
“People keep saying they shouldn't be Number 1 because they're in the Atlantic-10 and they keep playing those close games,” Virginia Tech coach Bill Foster says. “I've faced five or six Number 1 teams in my career, and they can play with any one of them.”

UMass (#1, 26-0, 14-0) 74
Rhode Island (15-9, 7-6) 69
at the Providence Civic Center

Camby is up to par with 25 and 13. Tyrone Weeks adds a valuable 16 and 9 in 23 minutes off the bench.
URI cut the lead to 3 on a Preston Murphy trey with :11.5 left, and again the crowd was hopeful. When UMass guard Carmelo Travieso missed a free throw and URI got the rebound with :05.5 left, the faithful were ecstatic. But Travieso redeemed himself immediately and saved UMass with an inbounds steal and dunk with :01.4 left.

Dare I say his last OOC game should be non other than the University of Massachusetts. ESPN would eat that shit up.

I like your line of thinking Twisters. We need as much TV exposure as we can get, and that matchup would get the folks in Bristol's attention.
