win total

Post by Chris20 » Thu Sep 22, 2005 6:50 pm

Now that the schedule has been reviewed, I am going with 17-10 heading in to A-10 tournament, with a stranglehold on an NIT bid and needing at least 2 A-10 tourney wins to have a shot at the Big show.....

20-7. UMass will be one of the biggest surprises of the year and get in the dance

Anywhere from 19-21 wins, and making the trip to MSG for the 2nd time of the season in the NIT final four and then making a strong push in the Big Dance Next Season!

21-8 with a loss in the A-10 final would get us in the tournament, unless we lose by 30 to UConn, BC, Charlotte, Xavier, UAB, etc, and only beat Savannah St. , BU, Hartford, and Duquesne, etc.....not likely.

I would be thrilled with the season with 17 regular season wins, and even more importantly, the return of good attendance and excitement ( which goes hand in hand with getting an NIT home game....). If we get more than that, and I will be very pleasantly surprised.

Given that we missed out on an NIT bid last year with 16 wins and a schedule very similar (and maybe even slightly stronger) than this year's, we might need 18 or 19 just to make the NIT.

The overall schedule will be stronger because the league will be much stronger this year.

I have them at 18-9 and 10-6 in league.

Out of league losses: BC, UCan't and UAB
In league losses: @Rhody, @LaSalle, @Temple, @GW, Charlotte and Dayton.

Or not losing in the first round of the A-10 tournament to a bad and depleted team.

I actually don't care how many they win. I just want to see some hustle and consistent effort and execution out there.

The wins will come. I would rather see 10 wins but consistent play and hustle than a Uconn win and losses to Lasalle and Fordham!

I agree with Kosty - Although I think LASalle and/or URI can be turned to W's if the team gells after XMAS. One way the team might gell is the opposition proactice team will have many real McCoys to practice against.

Still, it is about progress, momentum and building excitment. I think we are bubblicious for the NCAA, have to win A10, which will be tough with Charlotte especially IMO.

BTW, do we even know if there is going to be a post-season NIT yet, since the NCAA bought it out?

According to what was announced when the court case was settled it was stated that it would continue both the pre-season and post-season NIT. Although no long-term timeline was given.

I would have expected Lappas to win 20 games with Miami and Gonzaga on the schedule. With the schedule we now have if we don't win 20 games it was a mistake.

What could possibly lead you to believe Lappas would be even remotely capable of leading UMass to 20 wins?

I think the point was that if Lappas was here, the expectation of fans and media, with this schedule), would be a 20 win season. That is not to say Lappas could have done that (although I am not sure why we are discussing Vox's cousin anyway), but just that it probably would have been what was expected of this team regardless of the coach.

I think you have to cut some slack for a new program getting put in place. But this team should be very successful.
