If you haven't noticed, on that site's main page, they list the top ten (most active) petitions out of the hundreds that are there. UMass is #2 - just behind the federal marraige amendment and the UN resolution on Iraq.

Don't know if this has been brought up, but it may be worth contacting our state reps on this issue as well. I know both of mine -- Paul Frost and Guy Glodis -- are UMass alums from the same era I attended.

All the names and e-mails can be found here:

Not necessarily, here is one response:

Jeffrey,

Thank you for the email.

I am not for the change either I think it should remain as it is. I suppose if their teams were doing better than this wouldn’t really be a concern for them. My guess is, this another p.c. attempt at changing the name and using marketing and sales as an excuse to do so.

Last time this idea was floated many donors to the University threatened to pull their donations in the future and UMASS dropped it.

I will however, make sure I express my humble opinion to them as well.

-Sincerely,

Rep. Paul Frost

Interesting to see that while initially most signatures were from the northeast (MA, CT, NY, NJ, PA), since about 2200 or so there are an increasing number from across the US.

Keep spreading the word. I got a great response from an e-mail I sent to all the UM alums in my address book.

Whether I agree or disagree with the petitions point, I am REALLY happy to see so many UMass people getting involved. Congrats to whomever started the petition...and that comes from a guy who will choose not to sign it.

Its too bad Big Mark you have to add an incredibly stupid, insensitive comment like the one I quoted above, to an overall positive thing. Perhaps you should find another way to express yourself.

Any Chance.....

Post by NJFan » Fri May 09, 2003 12:17 pm

Does anyone think that this is could be big publicity stunt. By threatening to change the logo we've gotten more press for the school since our Final Four trip. UMass has been all over the radio, tv, internet, this has gotten the school more press than I can remember

I was just thinking about that. But how does the extra publicity really help us? I mean people won't go out and start buying merchandise because our school has been on the news. Certainly not if the logo, name, and colors are in jeopardy.

Pub Stunt?

Post by UMassHoops » Fri May 09, 2003 4:27 pm

If this turned out to be a publicity stunt it would be brilliant. But before anyone would take credit for that I need to see the sealed document that they put in a lock-box and dated before this started stating their intentions. Otherwise I don't believe it! But if you wanted to drum up interest in UMass and sell a bunch of UMass gear, no publicity is bad publicity!

absolutely...even though now the store has no 'original' Minuteman gear, the few that do probably are drying up quickly...but yea publicity has shot up ten fold since this started.

2805 and counting...regardless, this shows how non-supportive people are with the Gray Wolves name...
