Post by Kustodial » Thu May 13, 2004 8:58 am

Anyone know if we have any interest in the other two Champlain guys...

We obviously have one coming in next year and didn't we hire a canadian coach?

There's a 7'1" point guard on that list. What a freak.

Actually it states that his position is 7'1" and his height is "guard."

What about "myself" and "himself"? Apparently those two are the best players in Canada, so why the hell isn't Lappas all over them? Hoser.

Ivan Chiriaev, the 7-1 kid, thinks he's a point guard and when he declared for the NBA draft, he announced that the NBA needed him.

Apparently, he got embarassed in front of scouts at a high-school all-star game, (scouts started to leave in the first half), and hasn't impressed a soul in workouts, so he has pulled out of the draft - he's signed with an agent, so he's off to Europe and oblivion.

Another kid listed there, Oliver Prince, was almost killed in a car accident in 2001 - spent weeks in a coma and needed seven month sof therapy to get back up and around. He's signed to play at Pepperdine next season.

Anybody ever wonder why Lamoreaux's high school coach is sitting on the UMass bench?

This is the problem with Canadian basketball players. The top high school player thinks he is gods gift to basketball and scouts would not even watch his whole game. I would not expect big minutes from Olivier right away because there is going to be a learning curve for him. Hoops up north is a different ball game than in the US. Go umass

Hey, don't tell that to Jamaal Magloire or Steve Nash. They don't know they aren't supposed to be good enough to play in the NBA.....in the All Star game.

Yeah Steve Nash, Jamaal Magliore, and Rick Fox sucked in the NBA.

As do Denham Brown (UConn), Jermaine Bucknor (Richmond), Jimmy Balderson (BYU), Nate Doornekamp (BC), Sean Denison (Santa Clara), Levon Kendall (Pitt), Dwayne Jones (LaSalle)...and a slew of others.

A players country of national origin no more determines his ability to contribute immediately than does his state or hair color. It is a question of skill...and their are plenty of talented players in Canada that would be great "gets" for UMass.

The level of competition and competence of instruction play a gigantic part in whether a player is ready to contribute when getting to Division 1. While being Canadian isn't in and of itself any particular handicap, playing in the Canadian system is a disadvantage when compared to players who come up through the American circuit. Certianly it's not one that can't be overcome, but it's significant enough that those few that do excel can be rattled off the top of our heads.

The same arguments were made as little as 5 or 6 years ago regarding european players. And that has certainly been proven false in the NBA over the last few years.

Not to default into arguing with you VOR, but the same arguments were not being made about Eurpoean players and no legitimate arguments of that kind have been made about European players since 1992. There has been very little doubt that the apple that is the European continent was going to be able to produce world class players going back to the Barcelona Olympics and the same can not be said about the orange that is Canada. Their player development system isn't anywhere near as advanced as that in Europe. Canada's junior teams and professional leagues are only on the same planet as Europe's because of gravity.

Again, there are very talented basketball players trickling out of Canada, but very few will be impactful players immediately at the Division 1 level.
