KAEO Mathok Majok

Post by MikeUMA » Fri Jul 21, 2023 4:19 pm

He's here, he deserves his own thread. He has been and will be discussed in others, but still...

Listening to the newest edition (#7) of Just Being Frank, and Maxie is talking about playing internationally and having to deal with language barriers. Frank said it goes both ways, because Mathok has only been in the US about a year now. Frank said Mathok is still improving his English, and there have been some challenges communicating with some terms that he might not be familiar with yet. They're working on it, but it'll be interesting to watch how this develops.

Hopefully he understands the word "fuck" cause I suspect he'll hear it a lot.

I'm sure he'll learn a lot of new words.

I'm going to try to get to the open practice on Tuesday. I'll keep count of the F bombs.

You got the PG-rated version of Frank in that open practice, I assume.

^ Yeah, he tried very hard to keep it under control. I heard only 1 F bomb and maybe a couple of other minor cuss words. See my post in the 2023-2024 season thread for more details.

^ I don't recall the source, but I believe I've heard that Frank is much more laid back during practices than he is during games.

That was certainly the case last night, although Josh Cohen did say that Frank was taking it easy on them in front of the fans. If that is still the case regardless of whether fans are in attendance, I can see the reasoning for it too. Practice is for learning and development, games are for executing the concepts learned in practice. If you get it wrong in practice, that's ok, you're supposed to be figuring stuff out, but if you get it wrong in the game after being told in practice then you get "what the F are you doing out there, you bum!"

^ I think it might be a combination of both thoughts. I went to a practice last year and his language was not nearly a tame as last night. I hope he has figured out that he needs to tone it down a bit.

Maybe mentioned elsewhere, but worth keeping here also:

Jeff Goodman reports that Majok is suspended by the NCAA for the season's first three games. That's likely a minor academic qualification issue, but I'm speculating.

I'm not as bent out of shape about this as some others. Sure, we lack front court depth, but the schedule allows for us to get past this. I think the fact that this comes in tandem to some other news/injuries/departures compounds this a little more than what it actually is at face value.

If Cohen and Daniel are close to 100% and stay healthy we can probably get through the first 3 games. Daniel will have to play some 5 and Matt will move up to the 4 when Cohen needs a breather.
