How about an Honorary Doctorate for Julius Erving???

Post by DoctorJ » Mon May 01, 2023 8:30 pm

The real Dr. J isn't going to pull a Cosby on us. :x

Why the heck has UMass not given him an honorary doctorate and had him speak at graduation???

I shouldn't be the only Dr. J with an actual doctorate from UMass Amherst...

He already has a UMass degree, a bachelor's via UWW.

I'm serious. Why can't UMass make him an honorary recipient?

Hey, Mike Tyson was given an Honorary Doctorate at one time.

People who say no, can I ask why? Are you academics? I'm not offended by the idea and I'm shocked any of us would not think this is long overdue???

^ He got one. It wasn't well documented, but it did happen.

Oh wow.

Jeeze. It should have been celebrated at a higher level.

I'm so glad they did this. Thanks so much for letting me know.

I am feeling great satisfaction right now.

Long Live Julius Erving!!!

This seems to be the most recent Dr. J thread (should there be a KAEO pinned one for our legend?)... got an email about an event at the Naismith HOF for this week. Link is here if anyone wants to attend:

I'll put this here since it's about Dr. J. How inept is the Springfield Newspaper (including Mass Live)? A feature article on Dr. J. and they spell his name Irving throughout the entire article. What a disgrace.

https://twitter.com/masslivesports/stat ... 9364687219

I'm posting actual text from the article in case they fix it and the link goes to the corrected article.
Why did Julius ‘Dr. J’ Irving go to UMass?
Julius Irving had only visited UMass one, but a relationship between his high school coach and his future college coach helped lead him to Amherst.

They did pull the tweet...

EDIT: Below was stated in error... the article 69MG mentioned was the MassLive article, not the DHG article I mention below.
My original incorrect comment wrote:New article here with the correct spelling: https://www.gazettenet.com/UMass-legend ... t-52060163

It was done by the new guy, so while a major error, I'll give him a pass this time.

^ The original (in error) was MassLive. Is it the same as the Gazette article?

Oh! My bad... here's the MassLive article, which has been fixed. https://www.masslive.com/sports/2023/08 ... umass.html

You have to search for it on their site, and the search result still shows "Irving" (you can see it in the link above too).

A stunningly bad mistake.

I have the Republican delivered. I simply could not believe it!

I sent a message to them saying they should send Dr. J. an apology for such an embarrassing error.

Oof. That error was in the print edition?

It was bad when some recruiting tweeters did it last year (https://twitter.com/TiptonEdits/status/ ... 4055036930), but it's next-level when the major newspaper in the area Fs it up. Just another step towards death for that industry.

Ha. I just looked at that article page, and to add insult to injury, they're running the misleading internet ad with the Old Chapel. (Don't give 'em another click to check. Those ads rotate through a big pool. What you see in one session will be different the next time.)
