Return of Derek Kellogg

Post by RMurray99 » Thu Aug 11, 2022 7:18 pm

Didn't see this being discussed anywhere, but our good friend on Twitter, Blauds, tweeted out a few hours ago that Derek Kellogg is in talks to join Frank Martin's staff. Sage then followed it up and basically confirmed it. Sage's thread below.

I would totally be up for the return of DK as Associate Head Coach.

Why the hell not? He's a great recruiter and he has deep knowledge of the program. I think he could help Frank to adjust to the limitations of Amherst and help him break them down the way we did during Cal's time here.

Bring back DK!!!

I don't like it. I don't think he'd make the program better, and I don't think there's any value in him helping Frank "adjust".

C'mon, he's a UMie and he wants to be a part of the team. He's big enough to swallow his pride and assist Frank. He is loyal and a true Minuteman.

I love it!!!

Allen Edwards is the Associate already, but agree. He can recruit. Bring him back. He loves the University. He's from Western Mass. Heck, if Frank Martin leaves in a few years maybe he's learned enough to get a second shot at HC. But we can cross that bridge later.

Do you think that he’d make the program worse?

DK has a ton of passion and love for Amherst and UMass. You don’t really know what you had until you lost it - DK will give it his all and his recruiting skills will help.

But he wasn't fired for his recruiting ability. Bottom line is the guy loves the program and if he's humble enough to take a role as an assistant I would be thrilled to have him back.

DK was pretty good at scheduling, too. The program also celebrated its history during his time here. We had games in the Cage, Gahdin, Springfield, and Worcester.

Why wouldn't he want to come home to Amherst and be a part of what we are building??? He'd be closer to family and friends and would have a decent salary where his son can grow up near grandparents.

I hope this is more than a rumor and a gag. Could, of course, just be that bobble-head burning chump trying to have fun with us. Probably someone from ConU mad that we got Gapare after they offerred. You never know.

I vote for DK!!!

Worse? No, probably not. But I'd hope they could hire someone that makes the program better, not someone who doesn't make it worse.

I could be wrong, but I think these two things are largely a function of the AD, or at least the AD and coach working together. Almost definitely not just a reflection of the HC.

During the DK tenure, it was Derek and Tim Kenney doing hoop scheduling from what I was told.

DK has recruited in D1 since 1997. He has deep roots. He has a decade and a half of head coaching experience on top of that with a winning record. We won't ever get an assistant with his resume to come here.
