Re: Rate the Frank Martin hire
8/10
Pros: Hell of a recruiter. Started from the bottom, and now he's here. Understands the psychology of a player and can really get folks to truly believe in him. Has a final 4 under his belt.
Cons: Despite his final 4 at USC, only had 1 season in the NCAA tournament out of 10. His coaching psychology is out of style. Worried that he's simply coming to UMass as a place to "retire" with his wife.
Can't give anyone a 10/10, not without coaching a game yet. Hopefully he becomes a 10/10 hire in my mind down the road.

Re: Rate the Frank Martin hire
I rated this an 8, but only because pieces of it are TBD. I love that we did not go with an young unproven coach who needs time, or needs to learn or anything like that. We needed someone with experience and success. I don't get why some are worried about the "in your face" part. I think it's called accountablity and there is nothing at all wrong with having expectations that need to be met. Welcome to the real world. When you get a job later in life, no one is going to coddle you and it's a very good thing to have a level of accountablity and expectations that need to be met. Kids have it easy these days and I'm old school. I love the hire, and can't wait to see how all this plays out over the next few years!

Scoop, I rate u a 5 for your negativity.
Mr BB220, I'll add one other thing, kids who want to reach their full potential welcome a coach who pushes them into uncomfortable waters. I think a kid like Noah is gonna love this, and I expect him to be even better than he was this year. Born leader

I think you are absolutely right. I have coached for years and I tell kids all the time, If I'm pushing you it's because I see the potential and want to help you reach that potential. You can be tough on a kid, if they know your intentions are to help them be better and to guide and nurture. If they trust you, then you can and should push. I know if I was a kid was playing for a coch who's been to the final 4, I'd sure be listening and doing all he asked.Floyd wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 2:40 pm Scoop, I rate u a 5 for your negativity.

I don't get people saying that they'll know more once he coaches a game. The poll is about our assessment of Martin as a hire, not a projection of how he will do as a coach. Based on everything I know about who was available and would take the job, I can't imagine a better choice so it's a rousing 10 for me.
Re: Rate the Frank Martin hire
Me, a 10! Google him and I really like what I see on coaching philosophy. Just what this program needed, both players and fans. Refuse to lose 2!
Re: Rate the Frank Martin hire
I gave it a 7/10. I think Martin is a good selection in that he has experience as a successful D1 Head Coach and I think he also has the benefit of having some down seasons and then bouncing back. Resiliency & learning from experience to get better are among the most important qualities in success. I am also happier to have Martin than I would have been with Schmidt. Lastly I love Anya Martin's connections as a former UMass student athlete.
I do have to say that I was hopeful that UMass would interview some of the bright young coaches like Shaheen Holloway - But Martin is only 55...which now counts as kinda young to me .... But when I look at the record I don't see any games last season where SC beat a team that SC wasn't supposed to beat and that's concerning imo.... but Frankly (pun intended) I'm second-guessing myself since I have the same rating as IV.... which scares me and means I must have made a mistake
... can I change my vote to an 8 ?

I know people want to say he failed at SC.. but take out the covid season and they finished in the top 6 in 5 out of 9 years with a final 4. If MM finished in the top 6 in the A10 in half his seasons and won 18 games this year he would have an extension. SC isn't exactly a SEC power. Can say the same about Kanas St. He has won at schools that aren't traditional league powers. Contrast that to Miller.. Fantastic job at Dayton then failed in the B10.. at Indiana.. Dayton is the best job in the A10 hands down.. I could win 20 games at Dayton.. I voted an 8 because while I like the hire you never know. I do know he has proven more than Miller.. Should be a fun ride.

Scoop.. you could probably win 21.. you know the last coach for Dayton that didn't at least win 20 games in his tenure?? James Carter.. 1939-1947inthescoop wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 6:48 pm???????????????????????????????????????????????TheInsider wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 6:27 pm I know people want to say he failed at SC.. but take out the covid season and they finished in the top 6 in 5 out of 9 years with a final 4. Are you rating the coach, the job, or the coaching search?InnervisionsUMASS wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 12:48 pm I went with 7. It's not a slam dunk because we know the challenges of this position, and I think he was the 2nd, if not the 3rd choice (depending on where Kimani Young was in the rankings).
