Hi guys its a lazy Sunday and I'm reminiscing of some UMass basketball with my brother and we try to figure the name of this player..

He was a big old country boy who never got any playing time but had one big game and he looked Unstoppable for that one game. Not sure if it was a early 2000 or late 90 UMass team.

He was big he was white and he was fat.

Thanks

Jeff “Big Deli” Savloski played in 2004-2005, he played every game (28); albeit under 10 mins a game. He had 21 pets in a triple OT gave vs Xavier. From Bristol Central , (CT) HS.
Guessing it’s him..

His one big game is the great part: Deli scored 21 in a 3 OT win over Xavier!

About the size of a Subway.

Don't remember Big Deli's size - would guess 6'9", maybe 240. He averaged 2.9 pts and 2.3 rebs. He left after the season and enrolled at Trinity.

I remember that Xavier game. Big snowstorm that day. I’ll never forget the echo of Lappas yelling to Deli where he needed to go on the offensive sets. The empty arena made that simple.

I was also at the game. I just kept thinking, "Who is this huge lump who is single handedly keeping us in the game?" It's too bad that he didn't really enjoy basketball. He had some skills but never gave it a chance.

I’m not from New England, but is Bristol, Connecticut really considered “the country?”

I believe it was the resemblance to NBA and former Oklahoma State player, Bryant “Big Country” Reeves which triggered the “country” reference.

Travis Ford was not much of a “Big Deli” fan.

One of the best nicknames for a UMass player.
How about a list of UMass player nicknames?

Was Julius called The Doctor in his UMass days?
Another I liked was The Takeover Jesse Morgan

To my recollection, Julius was not referred to as The Doctor during his UM days here in Western Mass. However, per Wiki, he received the nickname "Doctor" or "Dr. J" from a high school friend named Leon Saunders.

Peter "Cougar" Gayeska is my favorite UM player nickname, with Big Deli a very close second.

With his completely shaved head, Winston Smith was called "Bulb " at least by his teammates. He is on the right edge of my photo here.
