Refuse to Lose

Post by uz2b-len » Tue Jul 14, 2020 1:50 pm

This is interesting. I thought Calipari even trademarked "Refuse to Lose." But it seems the Seattle Mariners were using it as a slogan in 1995:

I noticed that as well a couple weeks ago, when the MLB network aired a documentary on Ken Griffey Jr (WAY better than ESPN's McGwire/Sosa 30 For 30, IMO). I vaguely remember reading somewhere that Calipari collected royalties for this - maybe in "Going Big Time"?

I'm hoping Cal sues the pants off the town of Shrewsbury.

^ That's a clever repurposing of RTL

Side note: I got my Sh-sbury towns mixed up. It would make more sense of Shutesbury put that on their school signs, as that's where Cal used to live. But this is Shrewsbury, by Worcester. MA needs more creative town names. (I'm also looking at you, Florida MA.)

In going through my old tapes of broadcasts, I believe I may have found Cal's first documented use of RTL. He wrote it on the locker-room blackboard before the game at Rutgers on Jan. 12, 1993, and we talked it up in our pregame chat. That was a game where UMass led throughout until very late, fell behind 77-76, got 2 free throws from Lou Roe to go back up by 1 at the 24-second mark, watched RU's Jamal Phillips make 1 of 2 with 13 seconds left to tie at 78, and then Mike Williams won it with a straightaway 3 with 1.7 seconds to go.

Rutgers proceeded to call a timeout they didn't have left, got hit with a technical, and Jerome Malloy finished off the Knights with 1 of 2 technical foul shots for the 82-78 final score. Malloy, in his best-ever night for the Minutemen, made all 7 shots from the field, including 5-5 from 3, and 5-7 at the line for a career-high 24 points. I would say the Minutemen took the new slogan to heart that night.

Terrific story. Thanks for that.
