Game 30, 2019-20: at La Salle (3/4)

Post by MikeUMA » Sun Mar 01, 2020 3:21 pm

We're on to La Salle...

Our last true road game of the regular season coming up, Wednesday at Tom Gola. Explorers did their Senior Night last night, and took down Bonaventure in the process, 73-65.
https://goexplorers.com/news/2020/2/29/ ... r-day.aspx

Bona was alone in 4th place and a coveted double-bye, but now they're tied with Duq at 10-6.

Anyway, La Salle is currently 5-11 in the league, at 10th place, a game behind GW for 9th. If La Salle wants to avoid playing on Wednesday 3/11, they're going to want to snare this one on 3/4.

Seems like a long time ago when we took down La Salle earlier in the season. Pierre went for 20, Tre 19, and we got double-figures from Samba and East. Lets see who the scoring comes from on Wednesday.

The are 3-1 over their last four games, with wins against Fordham, GW, and most impressively, St Bonaventure. I think they are on the upswing a bit with their new coach. It's not gonna be an easy game. When we beat them back in January, they had a terrible shooting night (25 percent from three) while we shot over 50 percent from three. Carl was 5 for 5. And it still it was a close game. We never pulled away even with our great shooting.

Coachspeak generally says that "The most important game is the next game". In this case it's absolutely true. Win and we skip Wednesday, lose and it's up in the air.

^ Win Wednesday and I feel like they have a great chance to end the regular season on a two-game winning streak.

First game in 5 years that has me stressing advance. I hope it turns out like the game at La Salle that Terrell Vinson took over in crunch time. They couldn't stop him around the rim.

When we beat them, Carl was 5/5 from 3 and had 20 points. Enough said. We could not contain Deas, however, and the 6'6 wing went for 25 and 9. That game was prior to the stating lineup change with Kolton and Preston. I would put Preston on Deas and see if he can keep him to his A10 average of 8.8.

I haven't heard any more regarding Djery. I wish he was healthy enough to play as I don't want to see Tre wearing own. Touri wrote a great piece today documenting how we are able to switch between man and zone when Djery is available. That's been one of the factors in our improved D. He mentioned that we are mostly man when we have only Tre.

La Salle are 2.5 point favorites.

That seems about right. Shows the bettors are paying attention and not just going by the standings.

at the very least, bettors are aware that LaSalle is 8-6 at home and UMass is 2-9 on the road. Add in LaSalle winning 3 of their last 4 and perhaps 2.5 is too small a spread

Big test for the team tonight. I think we all agree we have a more talented team, but the struggles on the road are very real. Both teams should be coming out hard and I expect a tough, grind it out game. I'm hoping Preston can stay aggressive and make some plays like he did against UR.

They need a win to get back some positive feelings and have a little momentum heading into the URI game. I think a loss will be very deflating and could be a season killer, i.e. prevent us from feeling good heading into Brooklyn.

If they play with the intensity we've seen against VCU, SLU, we should win.

I absolutely believe if we give 40 minutes of 100 percent, we'll win. But we're not consistent about doing that on the road.

Line has come down to +1. Typically that means they want more money on La Salle, but I'm not so sure....
