Bruiser was not as bad of hire as people state. He provided continuity to the players. He was unable to recruit and keep the team Calipari levels. He is the only coach aside from T Ford who has a winning record after Cal. And he was still scheduling any team, anywhere, anytime. Lappas mortally wounded the program.

We need to upgrade at point guard. If Garcia is as good as advertised he will end out starting.

For anyone that wasn’t around, Brusier was the correct hire at the time...Lappas was the program killer that we may just be climbing out of...anyone with any inside knowledge at the time knew that Lappas couldn’t run a program. It took him 4 years to ruin what Massimino built up in 20 years. Rant over
False. Bruiser was the incorrect hire at that time. Moronic in fact. Rant over.
Seems like you are looking at it in hindsight which we all can see but at the time we had hired an assistant coach known as a good recruiter with no head coaching experience and young ...that guy took us to the Final Four and #1 in the country. When he decides to leave you have an assistant who had been there the whole time, has the same credentials as the guy we just hit a home run with, got a lot of credit for being a good assistant and helping with this run, had the backing of the departing coach, had the backing of Jack Leaman, had the backing of all the returning players...at that point he has earned that shot. To not see that was the thing to do at that time is, how did you say it, moronic...

The fact that you still aren't capable of understanding that Nascar Bob's decision to promote Bruiser was moronic is laughable. Let's hand the keys to the Porsche to someone who has never driven and then we can all pretend to be surprised when he drives off the nearest cliff. Utterly stupid.

Not 100% the same since Rhody didn't make it all the way to the Final Four, but so far David Cox has been a pretty good succession to Hurley. Outside of a handful of games in 2012 he had zero head coaching experience. We weren't poaching Coach K from Duke to come here. We weren't poaching Roy Williams from Kansas to come here. Could we have maybe found the 1 or 2 diamonds in the rough there are seemingly each off-season in the entire NCAA? Sure. Calling the Bruiser hire moronic is Monday morning quarterbacking at it's finest.

Wasn't Lappas the "experience" hire? Granted there's a big difference between hiring a wilting Lappas in 2001 versus a budding Lappas in 1996 (as in I don't think Lappas would leave #10 Villanova even for UMass coming off their Final Four run). But I think it's an interesting thought experiment as to what would happen if we just skipped over the Bruiser era and went straight to Lappas.

For what it's worth, I think Bruiser has had a respectable career as a coach. You don't have a 30+ year career in this field without knowing a thing or two.

I’ll take it a step further. Calling Bruiser’s hire moronic is ....moronic, whether it’s now or then.

I mean back in 1988, they gave the keys to the Yugo to an untested 29 year old with no head coaching experience. He turned that Yugo into a Porsche with Bruiser riding shotgun. It made perfect sense to hand him the keys when Cal decided to leave.

UMass was on a roll and bringing someone in from outside when the players would have preferred Bruiser might have alienated some and caused incoming players to go elsewhere (Ketner, Babul, Basit, Kirkland, Smith). Who knows? Who cares?
