Game 28, 2019-20: VCU (2/26)

Post by MikeUMA » Sun Feb 23, 2020 11:21 pm

Bummer that this game is on a weekday, 'cause this one feels big.

VCU comes to town. Although they're struggling a bit this year and lately, they're always a tough one for us. We're 2-7 all time against them, but that all time is only since they joined the conference in 2012-13.

Two weeks ago, VCU was 7-3 in the league, tied for 4th and a precious double-bye for the tourney. Since then, they've dropped four straight, and fallen into 8th place at 7-7. With yesterday's win, we're now 6-8 and tied (with GW) for 9th.

VCU's recent downslide:
A surprise 72-67 home loss to Mason. Mason out-shot VCU and killed 'em on the glass, 48-27.
A trip across town got 'em a 77-59 loss at Richmond. VCU stayed even on the glass, but got out-shot 50% to 34%, and 50% to 19% from 3.
Fought at home against Dayton, but fell 66-61. VCU was +10 on the glass, but got slightly out-shot and Dayton made 9 more FTs.
Traveled to SLU and fell way short, 80-62. SLU shot 57% to VCU's 40%, and was +15 on the glass.

SLU write-up from the last game: https://www.stltoday.com/sports/college ... 4e9dc.html

On the season, VCU shoots .342 from 3, but over the last four they're .267. Here's to hoping that struggle continues at Mullins. (Our 3 ball isn't anything to brag about though either, we're .231 over the last 6.)

On the glass, VCU is a -2.6 on the season. We're a -3.4, but have been doing better of late (+14 yesterday, and averaged -1.3 in the three prior). They're a -6.8 in their last four. This could be a big difference maker on Wednesday.

Chime in people. I gotta retire for the night.

A couple weeks ago I would have thought no way we would have a chance against VCU. Now I'm thinking that it might be a winnable game. They seem to be in the midst of a downhill slide and we are on the rise. Who knows though since we are pretty inconsistent.

The fact that we would pass them in the standings with a win is pretty wild. They were ranked in the preseason and now here we are. Let’s get em.

Absolutely winnable. Hard to see VCU losing 5 in a row in conference, but maybe their confidence is shot. They were on the right side of the bubble before this losing streak, now they’ll be fighting to stay in the NIT. They had big expectations coming into this season, so things can’t be good with the fans in Richmond right now.

I like our chances.

Something else to note: it is a "matchup" of the top 2 freshman in the conference. Matchup in quotes because they won't actually be matching up 1v1. Coming into the year it was thought to be a 2-man race for Rookie of The Year honors between Tre and Bones Hyland for VCU. Hyland is a player man and will be a problem for years to come - but the race for RoTY is over.

Both teams trending in opposite directions. UMass has been a completely different team at home and I hope they can smell the blood in the water and go for the kill. Need the Dayton/SLU effort and it's a win to be had.

I would have never considered this a winnable game at the start of the year and with my expectations at that point. With what has happened to VCU, it being at home, and with us seemingly improving over the course of conference play..... this could be a big win for the team and a huge confidence boost.

I don't wish ill will toward anyone, but if Hyland can't play it has to help. Douglas is toward the end of the bench but he is one of their tallest players at 6'8. If you look at VCU's stats, all 13 guys average 10 minutes or more in conference play. That's crazy!!!

Bones Hyland is also day-to-day with a hip flexor and Corey Douglas is out

EDIT: I missed this part.

Bones Hyland strained his hip flexor last week and came out early in the second half at Saint Louis. Rhoades said he's day to day, but that he'll start if ready to go, with Marcus Evans out.

What's the status of Evans injury? If you definitely out for Wednesday?

This is the most dejected I have ever seen the VCU fan base. On page 4 someone mentions the injury situation but we don't know how accurate his information is.

The tweet in the post above yours seems to indicate Evans is out. Also, per a headline from Richmond.com (subscription needed to read ) they will be without Evans and Corey Douglas "for the time being."

I think they're a very deep team and can overcome injuries to Evans. Santos-Silva is the only one I think would be hard to overcome. However, if Hyland is out, the combination of missing both him and Evans weakens them considerably. I caught some of the their game a couple weeks ago (vs. URI perhaps) where the announcer declared Hyland would "definitely be the A-10 freshman of the year" and wondered how he could know so little. Hyland may be the second best frosh in the league, but is far from #1.

Only a few days off the anniversary of the 2014 game against VCU (Feb 21), which may have been the last hoops sell-out at Mullins.

Was the Senior Night game vs SLU a sell-out that year? Another great game, but with a really unfortunate ending.

Nope, and I'm not sure why. It was pretty close to a sell out. I couldn't pull up the box score on the athletics site to get the exact number but I'm sure it's out there somewhere.

I had the same question and the same lack of success getting the box score. But I remember there were empty seats around where I was sitting in the corner for SLU. Sort of near IV-Land
