Ex UMass coach Steve Lappas after the game - “That was some horrendous defense from UMass.”

He's sick and didn't make the trip.
Thank you. Walfish could have tweeted that.

All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.

UG! What an ugly game. We had enough and left with 5 to play. My said watching the team warm up that they could not make any 3's and it carried over into the game. They are a very mature team with 7 foreign players that shoot 3's with great accuracy. In fact they shot 73% on 3's in the first half. Refs did not use their whistles in the first half either. Only 5 fouls called with 3 on us and 2 on them.

Well at least I have the women's game to look forward to tomorrow afternoon.

TOTALLY out coached, but that’s not hard to do when you’re coaching against a legend! Having said that, McCall is a terrible coach, especially on the D side. How many times did UMass get burned in the middle? The uncontested cuts across the middle were completely embarrassing, but also, easily fixable. On the O side, why not a double stack down deep, which would cause fouls on their bigs...nope, continue to rain empty threes.
This team with proper coaching, and the next year return of Weeks could work themselves out of the bottom 4/A10. However, this showing & the upcoming debacle v. URI will do nothing for recruitment.
Current UMASS “might” be competitive in the old Yankee Conference! McLaughlin, Skinner, Durant, and of course Dr., were fun to watch @ CH Cage🏀💥‼️

Ok, well, that was embarrassing and just as these guys look to take a step forward it's a giant step back as others have said. McCall needs to figure out how to compete on the road. His inability to get his team prepared and competitive on the road is becoming a huge black mark on his resume. We have 4 road games remaining (at URI, Fordham, Richmond, LaSalle). We need to beat Fordham on the road and can hopefully beat LaSalle as well.

I mentioned earlier that the big upcoming game is against Mason on Feb. 9th at Mullins. Davidson and GW are directly above us in the standings and both own the tiebreakers. There's almost no way we pass those two in the standings now, but we have to stay ahead of GMU to avoid the Wednesday game. As bad as last night was, we're still out of the bottom 4 at the moment and right were most predicted us to be.

Has anyone seen any postgame press conference or stories for the game? I'd like to hear what McCall had to say afterwards. All I could find was a brief AP story in the Gazette. Nothing from Walfish or the Collegian.

Did they not recognize what Davidson was running? Were they not prepared by the coaching staff? Where was the in game coaching adjustment? We got torched by a kid from KOREA! Can't wait for the second half.
[UMass coach Matt McCall said he normally can prepare his team for what to expect when opponents run certain plays or are in certain formations. However, there is a level of variability in Davidson’s motion scheme that won’t allow for the Minutemen to know exactly what is coming.

“Normal defensive principles in this game don’t really apply because of their motion, because of how much movement (there is),” McCall said. “As I told our team, you cannot script what’s coming. A lot of teams you play, you can script it; you can say a back screen’s coming here or a pick-and-roll is coming here or they’re doing this. It’s so random in how (Davidson) plays, you’ve got to guard your man, when there’s contact on screens you can switch, but it’s really you’ve got to sit down and guard, you’ve got to be alert.”]

Bergeron reportedly runs the defense.

Since Walfish was tweeting about where Clergeot was an hour after the game ended shows he wasn’t there. Here’s what’s McCall said

“Gotta be tougher to win on the road”. “Weren’t very good tonight”. “I have to coach better and we have to play better”.

Thanks Preecher, pretty much what I figured but I was hoping to see it somewhere in a game write-up.

We sucked. Get over it. Two weeks go McCall was the worst coach in the history of basketball. Last week he was making great strides. We have 9 games left and I hope the players are looking forward, not backward.
