I haven't been worried about fall sports returning. I've remained optimistic that even though Covid won't go away, basketball season is far enough on the horizon that we'll reduce the numbers and develop ways to combat it even if a vaccine isn't available. I'm starting to exercise a little more caution in my optimism as student athletes were allowed back on campuses recently and positive tests are popping up all over the place. Basketball, I'm still cautiously optimistic for a November start. Football, however, it might be difficult to get started on time if we continue to see positive tests.

But nobody has Tre Mitchell except us. I really believe after the way we ended the season last year, this team will surprise the league. Lots of balance, lots of talent, and good team chemistry. UMass time!
Tre is still incredibly underrated IMHO and needs to play a Jokic type role in the Umass offense next season .... I cant remember anyone who was more polished and performed at a higher level then he did in his freshman year.

Offensively he can literally do it all ...

-- Excellent ability to read double-teams and find the open man both from the paint and at the high post
-- Can shoot the 3
-- Has incredible footwork and low post moves
-- Can take big men off the dribble from the high post

Totally agree! What this team really needs is another inside beast who controls the glass, blocks shots, and can be that guy who gets his points on the garbage inside. Teams will double and triple Tre, and he"s got the vision and smarts to kick it out to an open guy. But there is a great opportunity for someone to step in and be that PF type to compliment Tre. I think if we solidify that role, with the versatility we have on the wing and guard spots, this team will be bad ass tough

I hear what you're saying and don't disagree in theory but this team is built to press for 30 or 35 minutes a game and there aren't many banger-style power forwards who would thrive in a system like that. Also, very, very few teams play two back-to-the-basket scoring bigs these days, so I don't foresee our lack of another physical guy being a problem in more than a few games. That said, we very well may struggle against the few opponents we face who do play that way, as none of the candidates who might start at the four spot (Dominguez, Degray, Walker) are going to overwhelm you with their strength or physicality.

I think DeGray is pretty physical.

He is. Lacks intensity sometimes but I think he will be very good and an offensive upgrade from Samba.

I remember a time when UMASS had an undersized center and power forward. Harper Williams and Will the Thrill turned out ok.

So right now we have 8 confirmed OOC games.

2 in the 2020 Jamaica Classic
Wake Forest
UNC Greensboro
Missouri State

The 2019 Jamaica classic featured 8 teams, including URI. Like most tournaments it looks like it was broken up into 4 and 4. URI played North Texas and LSU in Jamaica, and Nicholls at home before Jamaica. So I wonder if Umass will play 1-2 tournament games at home against lower-tier teams like they did last year with CCSU and Rider.

Northeastern (Away)
Harvard (Home)
UCF (Away)
Sacred Heart (Home)
Rutgers (Home)
Bryant (Home)

Still a possibility to play Umass-Lowell, Akron, Fairfield and Yale as well.

Last year they played 13 OOC games so still a few left to be scheduled.

They are guaranteed playing ULowell (H) and Yale (A) this coming season, Bamford has mentioned those games on a few occasions.

Fairfield at home might get pushed a year but it's very possible they are playing them this coming season as well, particularly with the emphasis on local OOC games amidst COVID.

They are supposed to play Akron at home but that's a game I could see getting pushed since Akron may not want to travel to MA this year. That said, UMass is traveling to UCF for an OOC game so Akron could come to MA if they elect to.

Why is that?

Tre is as comfortable from the 3 area as he is in the box. That makes Tre much harder to guard. If he is dragging the opposing 4 away from the basket to defend him, he will eat them alive. If they switch off and put a 3 on him, he can get back near the basket and use the size advantage. There are not many teams who have a 3 that can truly match up with a 4/5 defensively.

I believe UMassfan_19 was suggesting that UMass could play both Tre & Gasperini at the same time (at the 4 & 5) if they were playing against a bigger team and badly needed more size on the court.

If an opposing team was defending Tre with their 4, I'd assume UMass would have Tre almost entirely posting up in the paint as opposed to dragging his defender to the 3pt line. Hard to see Tre dragging a defending 4 to the 3pt line doing too much for UMass, much better to exploit his size advantage in the paint. Unless you're talking about switching on PnR(?), I can't imagine a 3 would ever be guarding Tre - I don't think there's any 3 in college who can defend Tre.

3. The freshmen (Dominguez, DeGray, Garcia, McCrory) need to contribute 16 points between them...
Yeah, I'll take the over on that
