Game 17, 2019-20: at St Bonaventure (Rochester, 1/15)

Post by Slapthefloor93 » Sun Jan 12, 2020 10:41 pm

Ready to move on from the Dayton game and set sights on this matchup with the Bonnies in Rochester. Even though it’s not at the RC, it should still be a very tough environment with ~90% Bonnies fans. All things considered though, this is a winnable game. Bona is 112 on Kenpom while we clock in at 172. They are obviously well-coached, and Tre is going to have a tough time scoring on Osun Osunniyi, but we shouldn’t be physically dominated like we have been in a lot of our losses. Should be some fun matchups with guys like Tre/Osun and East/Kyle Lofton going at it regardless of outcome.

Let’s go boys here’s to a .500 start in conference play!

We haven't beaten SBU since 2015. We're due but it won't be easy.

It's hard to know just how good SBU is. They have 1 good win (Rutgers - neutral site) but they have some bad losses (Siena & Canisius). They are 3-0 in conference, but they have beaten Fordham, GW and GMU. They are probably better than us, but not that much. In Rochester, maybe we have a shot. Here's their schedule:

Osunniyi has been playing great, with 21 blocks in the last 5 games. Bonnies are undefeated except when Osunniyi was hurt and the 1 game where he was in foul trouble and fouled out, playing only 17 minutes. Perhaps Tre can hit a couple 3s and draw him outside.
This isn't Dayton, but might be the second best team in the A-10 right now. Hard to tell given their schedule. I didn't think SLU could blow out Richmond in their gym this weekend, so who knows in the A-10. Bonnies coming in 3-0 in A-10, having beaten Fordham, GMU and GW. Their next 3 are @VCU, @Dayton and URI, so in a couple weeks we'll know.

Getting this game in Rochester is huge. At least the mongrels from that hell hole in Olean will be more than 6" from the court. We will certainly be dogs in this game, possibly by double digits. Until we win a meaningful game on the road I will continue to fade them on the road. Need to come out with better composure than they did at Dayton on Saturday. Could come down to the Tre vs Osun matchup, I hope they feed Tre early and can pick up some cheap fouls.

Don't you think Tre can cause some legit fouls? They won't be double teaming him because they're used to Osunniyi taking care of everything. Bottom line: they have the best coach in the league.

Bona plays a game in Rochester every year, sometimes non-conf, sometimes A10.

This will be the first time UM has played Bona there.

I just ran the numbers on how much Mark Schmidt owns us since taking over at SBU:
UM vs SBU before Schmidt: 36-17 vs Bona (.679)
Since he took over, UM is 5-13 vs Bona (.278)

Agree with 69MG that they're still something of an enigma, with their bad start and pretty soft schedule. But they're 10-1 in their last 11, and when you're hot your hot.

Every time I hear St. Bonaventure, all I can think of is Earl Belcher. Anyone remember him? Pretty good back in the day

Besides the usual mentions of playing good D, hitting outside shots and rebounding, this is a game where we need Sean to run the offense efficiently. An eight assist, 3 turnover game would be helpful.

It’s also a game where we need our secondary scorers to show up. They are good enough in prep and on defense to slow down Tre, Sean, and Carl. Guys like Samba, Keon, and Dibaji will need to capitalize on their open looks.

IMo this program is going nowhere until Tre gets some quality help upfront. Right now he is getting next to nothing!
He takes a beating every game, and it is only a matter of time until he breaks down.

I will be at the game. I work with a ton of Bona grads. Typically get a pretty good crowd but ticket sales were down. Still will be 95% Bona fans.
I agree that our other guys need to score some points. Would love the Umass coaching staff to teach Baptiste how to dunk the ball a foot away from the rim instead of trying to lay it up. Flush it always!!! Diallo is the x factor for sure. Hoping Tre can get their bigs in foul trouble. 100% need to take care of the ball. Schmidt will be well prepared. I hope our so called press is not utilized to minimize the easy baskets for the other team
