Game 12, 2019-20: Maine (12/20)
Not to get ahead of myself, but I just noticed this while looking at Virginia's season. Maine played at Virginia last week, falling 46-26. The 26 points were Maine's low in a game in the shot clock era (started 1986).

Maine also took on another of our opponents, falling 67-46 in Cambridge on November 10.

Maine is currently #339 (out of 350) in scoring offense, at 58.0 ppg, but they also slow down their opponents, as they're #90 out of 350 in scoring defense, at 64.0 ppg. That has something to do with their opponents though: offensively challenged VA, D1 newcomer Merrimack, and D3 Maine Maritime.

Sunday at 1 you can either watch football, or the Quinnipiac/Maine game on ESPN+
https://goblackbears.com/news/2019/12/1 ... cross.aspx
At the moment, Maine is 3-8, with their wins being over D1 newcomer Merrimack, D3 Maine Maritime, and Central CT.
Surprisingly, several common opponents:
Harvard - They lost in Cambridge by 21, we lost in Cambridge by 34
Virginia - They lost in Charlottesville by 20, we lost at Mohegan by 12
Northeastern - They lost in Boston by 15, we won in Amherst by 9
Central CT - They won in New Britain by 2, we won in Amherst by 46
Even after playing UVA a while ago, their season scoring average has gone further down since I last saw it. Today they're at #341 with 57.4 ppg. Scoring defense has also dipped: they've fallen out of the top 100, now at #117, giving up 65.3 ppg.

QU went bombs away today, going 15-30 from three. They hit 10 twos versus the 15 threes.

Re: Game 12, 2019-20: Maine (12/20)
Great to see the article on Senior Night vs Maine for the 74 team. It isn’t surprising to see them score over 100 points because we’d have a few games a year scoring over 100 (without the 3 point shot). Everyone on those teams could shoot. We were taught to take the highest percentage shot which meant the best good shot. If you took a bad or quick shot you immediately came out and you knew why.
For old timers the article brings back great memories of the packed Cage with 5,000 people. The bleachers were old and very uncomfortable but no one ever complained. Students literally sat 3 rows deep on the court itself in big games so Wally Novak could sneak a few hundred students in so the Amherst Town Fire Marshall wouldn’t know. Wally Novak and Dick Bresciani would always laugh when they put the attendance figures out because they would fudge the figure to 4200 to keep the Amherst Fire Marshall off their backs. They even made Wally have people at the door with old fashioned clickers to manually count the students. Wally would laugh and say “we had games where we had close to 6,000 in the place and thank God the town didn’t know.” I can remember having shoot around before training table at 4 PM and there were students in the cold starting to line up. What unbelievable fans to do that and it always stayed with me how great they were - today’s students have no idea what it was like. You could walk anywhere on campus or in town and people would stop you and wish you luck.
What Calipari did is amazing and he took it to another level and he out grew the Cage but with players like Camby, Dingle, Barbee, Herdon, Williams and all the other great players he brought to Amherst it was an amazing time to be a UMass fan. He had the place rockin. With a lot of luck the UMass program will get there again and a new generation of fans will get to experience the Pride of being a UMass fan. For years UMass fans were the best in New England and there was a deep love between the fans and their UMass basketball team. I hope this exciting group of newcomers to the UMass program stick together thru thick and thin and get to experience what players from the past experienced - it is extremely difficult to explain the atmosphere of the Cage and the Mullins Center during the Calipari Era but here’s hoping this young group is the spring board to another era of exciting UMass Basketball.

My first thought was that we'll never see that kind of widespread enthusiasm again because of all the other entertainment options that kids are into these days. But it wasn't long ago that I bought tickets as soon as they went on sale to see our team with Chaz in his senior year play VCU. The Bill was really rocking and it was a great game.

Len, that between the legs bounce pass from Chaz to Putney and the Putney dunk was one of the better highlight reel plays I've seen since the early 80's when I started following. Those teams didn't win any titles or anything but Chaz, Put, and one of my alltime favorites Maxie, were fun as hell to watch.

Re: Game 12, 2019-20: Maine (12/20)
Let's talk about the press. My understanding is that the press is the long-term plan and they want to use it as much as possible in order to get better at it. That's OK as long as they recognize when it isn't working and back off of it.
Maine is offensively challenged at 57.7 points per game and 29% from 3. A week or two ago I would have said don't press and make them earn their points. I probably still feel that way. But if they want to "perfect it" then go ahead with it at the beginning of the game and see how it goes. Just have enough sense to switch things up if Maine gets too many easy buckets (I can't put a number on how many, but we'll know it when we see it).
Hoping for a big lead so that CJ and Preston get a lot of minutes and Sy plays long enough to get back into the flow.
