Very encouraging first game. Fun to watch and a lot of good things happened. If they keep working hard, they might have something. Weeks was awesome. Looks like a thinner version of his old man!

That was a very pleasant surprise. They look a lot more connected than I expected.

Really solid 1st game. A lot of folks played and none of them looked like they didn’t belong.

* Tre missed a bunch of shots but his skill level along with his hands and feet are gonna be an issue for a lot of teams in his career.

* TJ’s shooting was great but I was more impressed by his overall bag of tricks on offense. Looks like a wily vet out there.

* Free throw shooting is a little scary.

* Can clean up some things on defense and also on the defensive glass, although I think the scrambling on the back end hurt them rebounding-wise. I also think Sy will help out there.

* With his injury issues and the seeming Dibaji-mania that has taken over (I am kidding...sort of), Samba has been a bit of a forgotten man out there. Here’s to an injury free season for a kid who by all accounts is a good hard working kid who can be a foundational piece out there.

* Both freshman point guards look to be pretty good in different ways.

* Lastly nice to have a team that gives a shit out there. Only game one so plenty of time for that energy to wane, but clearly these kids cared tonight. That’s a good start.

No Chatman tonight!!! out for personal reasons.
Thanks. I was going to ask why he wasn’t here tonight. EDIT: One of the fans in our row told me Sy has strep.
Clearly the guy meant Samba, who the radio guys said has strep in the post game show and confirmed that Sy was out for personal reasons.

the only real concern that I had is being out rebounded by a smaller team. Guess it's no surprise given the number of skinny freshmen we had out there. The defense should pick up over the next few games and the rotation sorted. Not disappointed in what I saw at all.
All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.

I’m not to worried about rebounding some of that is a result of a lot of rotation which happens in a press you do give up some quick baskets or aren’t able to box out weak side. I also think the rebounding was padded a bit by us missing free throws which are usually easy rebounds more often than not

Just to clarify, Diallo had strep but recovered enough to play. Can't wait to see him when he's 100%. Here's McCall's comment on Chatman:
Sy Chatman, the other sophomore returner for the Minutemen, did not appear in the game, McCall cited personal issues and did not elaborate.
This worries me because I thought this team had it together and there weren't any "distractions". We will need Sy if we play a bigger team. he showed a lot in the WNEU game.

Note to Tre; Don't get discouraged. You made all the right moves but the shots just didn't fall. They will!!! Play hard just as you did tonight.

Someone made the comment that TJ looked like Carl in his freshman year. That's exactly what I said to by buddies leaving the game. As a bonus, he plays tough D and gets to the hoop a little better than Carl did as a freshman.

There were a number of comments (and articles from the press) that stated how well all 7 freshmen played. CJ did not play, so only 6. But wow, they are very mature freshmen.

The Collegian's takes, their POV can influence student interest and attendance. Frankly, 3 articles are a great place to start.

That's the best the press has looked in I couldn't tell you how long.. it wasn't perfect, and some better teams will beat it, but guys looked like they knew where to be.
I only could watch the first half but that was my take away as well.

Few takeaways:
McCall was so excited and happy in postgame. I’m really happy for him. He knows he has players and a situation that is very positive with potential.
Free throw shooting needs to get fixed immediately. You don’t want to have a free throw issue because it kills so many opportunities.
Defensive rotations looked like experienced upper classmen effort. All I can think is that it might be from learning to press but obviously coaches and players deserve a great deal of credit.
There will be some ups and downs with young team but these guys are a great group to support. When the fans show up the games will be tremendous!! A sold out Bill will be amazing for all.

Great start to the season. That's a 20+ point margin of victory if they get the free-throw shooting to 65% and eliminate some of those reach fouls.

There will be ups and downs but gotta love the potential.

UML is an older and much more mature team. Probably the best thing was how they played at the end. In years past when we had a lead we would go into our famous slowdown offense. We would play tentative, run down the clock, and settle for a shitty shot. The closer this game got in the end, the more aggressive Umass got. Took open shots no matter how much time was left, locked down on D, and continued to press. I mean shit they locked down hard and the game was won. We will win games with that effort. The trick will be to keep it up after losing 3 or 4 in a row because that will happen.

That was my initial thought on Sy as well. A sort of "here we go again with the locker room BS", but it sounds like he had some family issues to deal with. From the Gazette:
CHATMAN OUT INDEFINITELY — The Minutemen were without the services of sophomore forward Sy Chatman due to personal issues. McCall said he wanted to respect the family’s privacy and declined to elaborate, but stated he had no timetable on when Chatman would rejoin the team.
That doesn't sound like a team chemistry/locker room issue, clearly something back home. I expect him to be back and be a big contributor.
