Pitino to UMass

Post by RTL » Wed Sep 18, 2019 6:00 pm

Pure speculation. But if Pitino wants to come back to the NCAA, would we give him the job? UMass would be the type of job he would get - I think. He isn’t going to get a Michigan or Ohio State job. And because he is an Alum, might make sense?

McCall is still the coach. I'd like to see what he can do now that he's revamped his staff and brought in some talent.

To answer your question, I think he's worth an offer. But he's a controversial candidate. One that brings righteous characters in the media (and fanbase) out of the woodwork. However, I don't think Pitino gives a shit about UMass. Or at least I don't think he'd view it favorably over any other comparable job.

I'd much rather see Erin Calipari get the job.

Not likely to ever happen. But if it did, I can guarantee we'd all get over it quickly.

If he were to coach here, I would expect the number of official visits to go way up.

This whole McCall - Tony experiment needs at least 2 years of experience to see where it can go. By then, Pitino will be 69 and it might be too late at that point. But everything aside, Pitino would be a move that may hurt our reputation, but on the court, it would be completely worth it. We're tired of all this losing and Pitino would most definitely help change that.

What reputation does UMass basketball have that hiring him would hurt?

I'm doubtful it'd have any impact on academia either. Is someone going to deny a researcher a grant because their employer hired a scandalous basketball coach?

A successful basketball team might improve applications, student life, and alumni relations.

...Again, not that the job is open nor is he coming here.

This is the second thread in 2019 on Ricky P! In the first one McKinney was on the "not happening" side.

From LS71, who has had season tickets since the peach baskets: "He was a pain when he played here and he was a no-show when the the court was named for Jack Leaman. He was a no-show when was supposed emcee the dinner preceeding the retirement of Al Skinner’s number despite being a strong advocate for Al."

He's still on the "not happening" side... it's the last line of his post in this thread:
