^ I think its because of the extra year due to Covid. Once this wave of players cycles thru, I think it will be back to normal, in terms of players entering college. But I think it definitely hurts the current group of HS players.

I could be wrong tho

That makes sense. Without being to read the article that’s what didn’t make sense to me. Theres’s a lot graduate students now I guess playing D1 ball. lol.

They arrived at the 700 figure by estimating that 2 less HS players per team in Division 1( 350 teams). The portal may be open now, but March 20 is when you can start picking up transfers. The coaches want the deck clear for that date, so they can begin adding immediately and not fall behind.

So is it a delay in the HS kids coming in or is it something else? The portal and signing transfers on March 20 seems to alter the timeline. there’s nothing stopping teams from signing HS players after they get the players from the portal.

That’s a good possibility after the dust has settled and they’ve had their pick of the transfers.

Another interesting point was that some coaches won’t allow their players to shake hands with the opposing teams after games, ostensibly because of Covid, but in reality
because they’re afraid assistant coaches will whisper “sweet nothings” in their ears. Or worse, some players have asked opposing coaches to “hit me up after the season.” The tampering, even though forbidden, is out of control.

So if we aren't recruiting at the HS level and depending on transfers, what do our assistant coaches do for a living?

A little of both. If we are sitting back and waiting to see who hits the portal, what are they doing with the hundreds of hours that coaches spend recruiting. Not installing good defensive schemes.

If this HC is waiting on the portal he needs to go, living off transfers is no way to build a program. I can see filling a void or two via the portal but bringing in 3-4 transfers every year is a losing proposition.

This is a very valid question and point.

Who says they're not recruiting? Maybe coaches have word of kids looking to move on and transfer and are following them as well as looking at HS players. I highly doubt they're not doing any recruiting

Because they're not announcing on this board exactly what they're doing at all times. :?

They may very well be... doesn't mean the question isn't valid. They only had 1 HS commit for this year (whom they kicked to the curb for another transfer), and have no HS commits for next year. Based on that, I think it is a valid question.

The lack of freshmen is concerning. Are we even rumored to be with any freshman for the fall? Really feel bad for the new coach, because next year is going to be potentially really bad. Kolton Mitchell might be our STAR !!!

There are offers out there (see link below), so we know they are/have been doing something. With that said, I think it has been made clear that this staff prefers to recruit from the portal rather than the HS ranks. And after we pushed out our only HS commit last off season, I suspect players that do hold an offer are wary about accepting it.
