Update. I look at this as an opportunity. More possible transfers and decommits as well as more assistant coaches looking for jobs.

our Travis Ford to T Boone College, sure, but I never would have thought a school like Bama would hire the Buffalo head coach.
All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.

Fantastic hire. Despite Bryce Drew going 0-18 in conference play, I was not convinced that he should have been fired since he did bring in two Top 10 recruits to Vandy. But I do believe that Jerry Stackhouse can become a home run hire, was the best coach in the G-League last season.

^ The track record of NBA coaches in college is terrible, maybe a G-League coach can fare better?

I like it because I see it similar to the Penny Hardaway hire. Young coaches who are ex-NBA players immediately grab the attention of young rising stars in high school. And if they can coach on top of it, you're in really good shape. Penny Hardaway has already received commitments from 4 Top 100 players, including the #1 player in the class of 2019.

The reason people were high on Penny is the reason they like Stackhouse...both were involved with running and coaching an AAU team and they have made the right inner contacts that it takes to get a program going.
They have to go out and prove it but they have a better foundation than just NBA guys like Avery Johnson. HS kids now have never seen Penny or Stack play...that part means very little.

Sounds right. Can't argue there - have the same thoughts.

After a social media encounter with Jerry Stackhouse, I hope he has a great run at Vanderbilt. The man is a total class act and I suspect he'll be an excellent college coach.

The hire might work out great, and I admittedly don't know a lot about Hardaway or Stackhouse, but isn't Hardaway extremely connected in the world of Memphis area hoops? Hardaway not only coached/ran an AAU team, but also coached a Memphis high school team (both immediately before taking the Memphis job) if I'm not mistaken. Stackhouse was coaching/running an AAU team in the Carolinas maybe?

Penny was around the Memphis program as far back as when we beat them at the TD Garden on Vinson's last second shot as a freshman. I sat behind the Memphis bench and Penny wasn't far away sitting directly behind the bench. He'll continue do a good job there

Perhaps this will deter Noah Hutchins from signing with Buffalo and give us the edge.
