Big Deli reports

Post by harbo » Tue Jan 27, 2004 11:27 pm

Some reports on Big Deli. Player of the Week, scored 1,00th point, a 23-point, 17 rebound game. Can't find any season stats like shooting percentages, rebounding.

Apparently been battling ankle injuries

From the first article:

"Next year at this time, Salovski will be at UMass on a basketball scholarship. He plans to study engineering."

Nice to hear!

This kid needs to drop down to 280 and the game should be a lot easier on his ankles and knees. The ankle injury actually makes me wonder what he may be capable of doing if he can get into better shape. I was concerned with earlier reports of his production. It seems to me that a 6-11 high school player should be dominating. The 23 pt, 17 reb game sounds great.

I'd like to see him get addicted to weight training, get stronger and become a monster at UMass.

A few more updates:

The Bristol Central Rams stand at 14-4 with two regular season games left. Three of their four losses are to CT Top-10 teams. They are relying on the inside-outside game of Big Deli and DJ Hernandez.

Some updates for the big guy:
19 points, 10 rebounds in a 68-74 loss.
21 and 12 in an 88-66 win.
8 points in his final home game in a 78-43 blowout.
16 and 17 in a 66-40 win.

Just out of curiosity. We keep calling them Big Deli and the Canuck. Can anyone here name them (and the third new guy guy coming in next year) without looking their names up? Five points to the first who does so.

For some reason this kid just dosen't impress me. I guess its a combo of him not being ranked anywhere near the top 200 and the potential for him to never be in TOP DIV. 1 playing shape.

I think he'd be a nice addition to a class that had someone very highly regarded as it's always worth taking a risk on this kind of size, but being half of a 2 man class where neither player attracted any real attention from major programs is troubling. As we know, you don't have to be in the top 50 to go onto be a special player. But when we're talking about the stricty visceral excitement the promise of recruiting generates, this class doesn't have much of it. It doesn't mean that they won't be solid contributors or even stars, but they definitely don't get the blood pumping any faster right now.

Agreed, but Lawrence Carrier(who is not technically part of this class) is generating some excitement around here.

About Carrier- has anyone here seen him play or know where he was rated last year? Who else was he heavily recruited by? The only thing I remember hearing about him is that he was a good player who had shown a tendency on more than just one or two occasions to be very lazy. If the lazy part is true then here we go again back to the coach. Lappas is going ot have to be the one to get him to put forth max effort EVERY day.

That's exactly what I worry about. Lappas seems like a "let them motivate themselves" kind of guy. I'm not sure this works with a Carrier (or even a Roe, who called himself a lazy sack of bones in high school). Hopefully Lappas's replacement will be a better motivator.

Do we have too many post guys next year? With Freeman, Lee, Carrier, Lasme, Big Deli, Oliver, Kouyate we seem to be a bit overloaded. I guess it might balance out with Anthony, Arthur, Maxwell, Chadwick, Vigg and Martin playing on the perimeter next year. Which makes me think that is 13 guys on scholarship with only 12 available by NCAA rules, right (Im sure this has been talked about before but I might have missed it)? If we are one over the limit then you gotta think that they might redshirt Oliver or Big Deli.

Jeff Salovski, Oliver Lamareaux (spelling?) and Lawrence Carrier...wasn't so bad huh?

Carrier was the 86th rated recruit in the country this year (using the same system that rated Bowers coming out of St. B's) Supposedly a big time 3-point threat

I am down on this kid because he is 7 feet with a wide frame and was recruited by us and CCSU. That to me is alarming. If he was half-way decent big name schools would have been knocking. They have the benefit of redshiriting a kid and giving him a couple years to develope and not be hurt by it. Laps one skill has been recruiting and we are now battling weaker regional teams for kids and this is a problem. Also this kid is 7' 300 lbs. He should be dominating. He does not even play for a prep school so his competition is not all that great. Viggs was Ct player of the yr and hardly any d1 schools were recruiting him. You can look at it two ways. The competition is weak and people know it or maybe we grabbed someone who flew under the radar. Personally, after seeing him on tv on a random sat. I think it is the first and not the second.
