Yikes! This game has a whole new look: https://collegebasketball.nbcsports.com ... efinitely/

I feel for kids who get injured, but after last year I don't have much compassion for teams that are shorthanded. And, I'll take any advantage we can get early in the year when we are trying to figure out our rotations.

Harvard fan here.

Yes, Harvard is competing without Towns and Aiken for the foreseeable future, although there has been some noise suggesting that both will be back before the start of the Ivy Conference schedule. The result has been minutes for the bench and at least two freshmen, guards Kirkwood and Friedman. Junior Christian Juzang and Sophomore Rio Haskett have inherited Aiken's minutes, just as they did last year when Aiken missed the final 14 games. Harvard will miss things like the 30 points Aiken hung on UMass last year in that double OT contest at Cambridge.

The absence of Seth Towns is much worse for the Crimson. Reigning IVY League POY, his scoring, rebounding and defense are sorely missed. Center Chris Lewis (18.5ppg on 80% shooting) is now the only threat around the basket.

Any pre-season rankings (e.g., #7 midmajor) are now gone and Amaker will use a competitive OOC schedule to develop younger players and see what he has. I'm hearing that Towns could return before Aiken, but no reason to rush either of them at this point.

Hoping for a competitive game - again!

I'm really looking forward to this game. Harvard is light years ahead of Lowell or UNH in terms of skill and size. Yes, they will miss Aiken and Towns, but they are deep. In their first 2 games they have 10 players averaging at least 11 minutes. Their starting lineup isn't huge:
6'9
6'5
6'3
6'2
6'0

However, their first 4 off the bench are 6'7, 6'8, 6'10 and 6'11 so they can throw a lot of height at Rashaan. If they had Aiken and Towns we might have been underdogs but we will probably be slight favorites with them sidelined.

Please ignore the UNH game. They aren't very good and we shot the ball extremely well. That won't happen every game.

Ken, it probably won't match last year's mini-classic, but I think it will still be a competitive game. UMass has a ton of new players, both transfers and freshmen, and Coach McCall is still trying to find the best rotations. No question the absence of Towns will hurt Harvard because UMass doesn't yet have much of an inside presence after Holloway. Amaker is a great coach and I'm sure he'll find a way to keep it close. I love that UMass and Harvard seem committed to playing annually for the foreseeable future. It has become a nice little in-state rivalry!

UMass 72 Harvard 66

I’m actually disappointed Towns and Aiken aren’t playing - would rather get as tough an early test as possible. Still should be a good game, though. Lewis is pretty athletic from what I recall and should test RH. The Kirkwood kid is supposed to be really good, excited to see him play.

I'm looking forward to this one.

I'm encouraged by the latest weather forecast since it predicts that the rain should stop by game time.

Hope the students there in large numbers! 8)

Anyone from Boston know if there are any bars that will be playing the game? I know it's on ESPN+ but I'm leaving a work dinner in the city at 7 and am hoping to hop into a bar so I don't miss the 1st half.

I don't know of any planned gatherings, but both the Celts and Bruins are off so you should be able to convince any bar to spare a TV for the game.

Especially with neither the Celtics or Bruins playing, your best bet is the Fours which has a UMass connection.
