Obviously he can't say that. And pushing hard is definitely his style -- regardless of roster limitations -- and hopefully it will bear some fruit when he has a full group of his kids, including some of his own recruits.

Again, I didn't even see the game so have no idea how hard they seemed to play and I don't even think this is a big deal. I just found it interesting that folks here seemed to think they played hard, but MM didn't seem happy with the effort. Sure some it is probably coachspeak, but there are also degrees to how you can say things and clearly MM doesn't sugarcoat things (which is fine). I do think that is how he felt in addition to wanting to establish a culture.

But yes, no shit he can't say, "Hey we are undermanned and are going to lose no matter what!" (or whatever example you want to use).

I was there. Pipkins played full on pretty much every minute he was out there. Hines never looks to me like he's playing hard, even when he is. The rest of the team (all four of them) played hard most of the time but definitely not all the time.

This is the perfect sum of the effort level last night. I'm going to avoid calling out specific players but I think you could tell who really wanted every possession and who didn't. I don't want to assume to know what people are thinking but it seemed like once GW started to take over they kind of threw their hands up and said well we're undermanned this was supposed to happen. I think CJ and Pip in particular were pissed off all night (and Carl to a lesser extend) that they were getting steamrolled by a team I (and they) know they are better than.

I often wonder if it ever appropriate to not worry about the last few regular season games and just work to prepare for the post season. Right now, I don't know if we are locked in to the opening round of four, but if we are, and with our depleted roster, why not just play to work on things, don't over exert themselves, get the walk-ons some playing time and don't worry about the final score. Granted, this goes against the mindset of high-level athletes and coaches, but the goal each season is post-season success. They already know they can compete with the likes of URI, so why not work on being healthy enough (including getting the walk-ons up to speed enough to give the regulars a breather) to play four games in four nights. I'll gladly trade a couple of regular season losses for a couple (or four) A-10 tourney wins.

I'm with BR72 on this one. I understand they're woefully shorthanded, Hines committed a couple of terrible early fouls and from that point on UMass was virtually powerless to rebound or defend in the paint... but the first 20-30 minutes of that game were awful not just on the defensive end, but the offensive one as well. Pipkins, Pierre and McLean were a disaster offensively.

Bad performances happen, UMass being short-handed or not, last night was a bad performance from players who are better than they showed.

That has always been my issue with Hines. He only hustles and shows the need to play hard when the ball is around him. His offensive movement and defense without the ball is no bueno. I have seen a lot of lackluster efforts from him, like at times, he is lacking the passion for basketball. His talent is there but the passion may not be.

Where the new metal detectors used last night? I know it was a small crowd, but if so, did they help?

They were in use last night and I thought it made a significant difference.

The detectors worked fine; looks like they were tuned to detect knives, guns, keys and machetes yet didn't detect my stainless steel watch with stainless steel bracelet. The line (small as it was) moved right along.
