Was there that much on the line when Ford left?
Not even close... His last recruiting class here was garbage (in terms of talent) the UUBP (Unnamed UMass Basketball Podcast) broke it down this week. Now, that's not to say he wouldn't have done what he usually did in bringing in top talent transfers - but needless to say the arrow was pointing down from the NIT F4.

He was looking to better himself and when the big bucks came along he jumped at them.

Heading out to Davidson tonight for the Davidson/St. Bonnie game with my son who came in from Vegas last Friday for my birthday this week (81). He is heading back to Vegas tomorrow. Hope to see Tim Kenney at the game.

And then there is this: http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/crim ... e6789.html

The news here is that the three has become four.

I wasn't even alive when Cal left, so I have no clue of the situation.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but here's my take. The coach before Ford was Lappas and there were years of uninspired, boring basketball. When Ford took over, he changed the style to uptempo and went 13-15, 24-9, 25-11 in his 3 years, making the NIT semi-final at MSG in year 2 and the NIT final in year 3. We looked like a program that was going to be a perennial challenger for the A10 title and at least an NIT bid every year with a decent shot at the NCAA.

When he departed the way he did and left us with a horrid recruiting class we were all ticked off wondering what might have been if he stayed and recruited. That's my feeling on why a lot of posters are not exactly fond of him.

This is an accurate reflection of the time. I was pretty annoyed with how things transpired but I've moved on and he's just another coach now. I don't hold any grudges. No reason to make myself suffer.

Like I was trying to say (maybe badly) the guy who took over for TF did little to help himself. MM walked into a shit show and lost half of his team overnight, but I have not heard one excuse. You can say DK was left with very little, but his 1st starting 5 was better than the one we are putting out there now.

If DK did with that group that MM is doing now, DK's incoming class the next year is probably easier to sign up..... Instead he ran that circus DDM thing and they looked just as lost then as they did 8 years later in DK's last year.

The "bare cupboard" conspiracy is a flimsy excuse to cover for a poor coaching job - PERIOD.

Ford gets my polite, appreciative applause, then I root to kick his everlovin' ass for the rest of the night.....

I’d give Ford polite and respectful applause. No room for bitterness, Ford’s tenure gave us an all too brief taste of success that was bookended by mediocrity. I’m just hopeful the fans start showing up and we make it impossible for MM to consider making the same move. I predict a similar 3 year run of success with MM and he will get the same type of offers.

If MM keeps this thing running in the current trajectory, Bamford would be an idiot to rip up the contract after year 2 and pay him more. We need 5 years of MM at a minimum and holding him to that paltry contract will pretty much push him out the door the second it becomes a viable option. Next year will be the last year we pay DK to NOT be here. I don't know how much we actually pay DK this and next year in total $, but I would be all in favor of using that money to pay the new guy to STAY......

I don't know how much RB would have paid DK (instead of McCutcheon) but I bet he NEVER would have gotten roped into that 5 year extension (at least not for that kind of money). Regardless - MM will be worth a hell of a lot more than $275K. Double it, then incent him to $800K or $900K.

Agreed. I was pissed for a few days when Ford left the way he did, but once things settled down and I was able to see things objectively, I realized that, realistically, he couldn't refuse the huge salary bump he was getting. You could look at it as a bit of bad luck on our part - the coaching candidate pool was shallow that year, and like him or not, he was a good coach (and one that we could have benefited from for a few more years, at least) and OSU recognized that and threw boatloads of money at him to get him. For me, there is no ill will.

If you are an early arrival just waking up and sitting in your dorm room or pulling up in the station wagon with the family and a carload of stuff right now-- Hit the showers, grab a bagel, grab 3-4 friends, shotgun a few beers and then get your a$$ over to the Mullins!

Perfect way to kick off the semester!
