Springfield News Paper Coverage??
Springfield News Paper Coverage??
I open the paper this morning. As usual, NO mention of the LaSalle game even with all the records set, etc. etc. Do they even send a reporter to cover the games anymore? WTF!
Re: Springfield News Paper Coverage??
‘Springfield newspaper coverage‘...an oxymoron if ever there was one.
They generally point readers to masslive for coverage because the game ended too late, or some such nonsense.
Hey it’s not like a reporter has to race back to Springfield before press time anymore since Al Gore invented the interweb.

They will come crawling back once there is success. Not a second earlier.

I think the guy -- Tom Westerholm I believe is his name -- who covers the team for Masslive is pretty good. Better than the guys they've had in the past.

Coverage on local TV stations is lacking as well. Channels 22/40 don't seem to have regular sports segments like they used too. Gotta have eight or nine mini-weather reports scattered throughout the news broadcasts instead.
Rich Tettemer did a brief summary of the UMass game on the early news this morning on channel 22, but no highlights.

Guys, this has more to do with the nature of today's media rather than a shot at Umass basketball. Newspapers are dying, local news coverage is a joke for the most part. The days of waking up and drinking your coffee and reading the sports page are close to over.
Tom posted his article to Masslive.com at 10:41 last night. That's too late for the Sports page nowadays. I couldn't tell you how many Red Sox game results weren't in the paper this past season because they got over too late.
If you're looking for his coverage, you'll have to go online to find it most times, save for maybe weekends or bigger games. It's not too hard to find. If you can come on the Umass message board to comment on it, you can take the time to go to MassLive and find the Umass articles there. He wrote 2 articles, one about the game and one with some LP insight.

And yes, of course IV has a point. If they start to turn it around and become locally relevant to more than just the hard core fan, they will budget for more Umass games/coverage I'm sure. If they are judging local interest on the amount of people that go to games, that may take awhile.

No...but the game did go to OT, then there's the post game presser and interviews, so yes 10:41 is too late for print nowadays.LS71 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2018 8:17 am ‘Springfield newspaper coverage‘...an oxymoron if ever there was one.

The game was covered on the Boston news cycles last night for both the 10 and 11 hours. First time I've seen UMass coverage by Boston all year.
Save your breath... you'll need it to blow up your date

10:41 too late? They saved space for the National FB Championship!
Re: Springfield News Paper Coverage??
^ They do save space for high profile events like that. Seems like the edition that's delivered in Springfield used to got to press later that it does now. I had reason to leave my house at 3:30 am for a trip a couple of months ago and the morning paper had already been delivered.
Hopefully as UMass continues to improve, they'll start to save space for them again.

Re: Springfield News Paper Coverage??
I am confused as to why this is shocking to some. They very publicly stated 2 years ago that they were dropping coverage of UMass Athletics.

Re: Springfield News Paper Coverage??
^ I'm not shocked, just disappointed; especially since Tom Westerholm does a good job.
