Game 9, 2017-18: Holy Cross (12/6)

Post by Steve81 » Sun Dec 03, 2017 11:11 pm

Like playing Holy Cross and in the absences of the thread, started it.

Kind of shock that in less than 72 hours of a local in state match-up and there was no thread here or on the Holy Cross site.

"Holy Cross site" as in Holy Cross message board, or their official site? If they have a forum, share a link. If the latter, that's not too surprising, typically you don't see official previews until a day before.

Are they still going to be 'The Crusaders' when we play them?

Why wouldn't they be?? Maybe I'm missing a joke.

Taking a look at the Crusaders...

Holy Cross was picked to finish 8th out of the 10-team Patriot League. Last year, they were 5th at 9-9, but bowed out of their conf tournament in their first game.

They were likely to regress a little, as they lost their top 2 leading scorers, 4 of their top 6, and their leading rebounder.

So far this year, they're 2-5 overall 1-4 away from home. They started out 2-0, including a home win over Harvard, 73-69. Cross shot 50% from the field, and Harvard did it to themselves with 23 turnovers.

Cross also played at Rhody, and took a predictable loss, 88-66.

They're coming off a two-day event in Belfast this weekend. They lost Friday to Manhattan, and Saturday to La Salle, 58-54.

In the stats department, they have 4 guys who are all putting up about 11 ppg...
Karl Charles (6'6" 194 F Jr) at 11.5 / 1.7 rpg
Caleb Green (5'10" 173 G Fr) at 11.4 / 3.1
Patrick Benzan (5'11" 172 G Jr) at 11.0 / 4.0
Jehyve Floyd (6'8" 226 F Jr) at 10.7 / 4.9
After that, it drops to under 6 ppg. 5th starter is Jacob Grandison (6'6" 190 F Fr) at 4.7 ppg / 2.2 rpg.
Leading sub is Matt Faw (6'9" 206 F Fr) at 5.9 / 1.6
3 other guys after that get sporadic PT.

If those low rebounding numbers caught your eye, that's their glaring weakness. They're averaging 26.6 rpg, almost a full 10 under their opponents average. The 26.6 is currently next-to-last nationally, 350 out of 351. (At 349 is Richmond, no wonder they're 1-7.)

Shooting wise, Cross hits .474 from the floor (versus our .451), and .348 from 3 (versus our .363). Charles & Green both connect at about 40% from deep, but they're not volume shooters. Ray Miller has shot more 3s then each of them, and Pipkins twice as many.

In last year's game, we won 68-60 in Worcester. Benzan tallied 12 & 10 for HC, Charles 8 & 6. We won the glass by 10. Among our scorers, 47 of the 68 points came from guys who are gone now. Pip scored 11 and dished 6. Holloway went for 10 & 8. CJ & Hines only got 13 and 5 minutes respectively.

I'm guessing we'll be favored by about 9.

Two things:

There is a PC movement in play to change the name from "Crusaders". Maybe the Crusades never happened. This PC crap befuddles me.

If we play with intensity, don't foul and don't turn the ball over we should win even if our shots aren't falling. If we lose this one there will be no asses in the seats for many a game.

Chaz posted on Twitter he might be in town for the Holy Cross game. Not sure if he is still playing for the team in Finland he started the season with. I think we will start this big homestand with a W. Pipkens likes the rims at Mullins and Holloway will dominate the paint versus the Crusaders UMass 80 HC 71.

SPLIT TOPICS NOTE

This thread got WAY off topic with the debate about Holy Cross's use of Crusaders for their athletics. If you want to talk about that, go over to the new thread:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=15318

From here on out, keep this thread on the actual game tomorrow, please.

This is a game that we should win however it could very easily be a tight one as well. Holy Cross beat Harvard who we lost to earlier in the season. We shall see. I do not want to lose to Holy Cross, we need to get back on the winning end - as does HC, who has lost 5 straight now and just gave La Salle a battle.

FIRST OFF: Sorry for the thread hijack. Only meant the comment in jest, forgot where I was posting :)

SECOND: This should be a get right game for these guys. Back home after hanging with a tough SC team and hopefully will have an OK student turnout. HC coming back from Northern Ireland over the weekend and one of the worst rebounding teams in the country, we should have more than our fair share of put backs on the offensive end which I would almost call a strength for this team (stats might back me up, but the eye test surely does). I'm expecting - read: hoping for - full effort from the tip and a nice win where maybe we look shaky at times but the game is never really in doubt. To me the only way HC makes it a game is if they hit 50%+ from three. UMass 77 - HC 65.

Take that Harvard/HC game with a grain of salt though.
HC shot 50% that night, matched only one other time this season, and both of those were at home.
Harvard turned it over 23 times. Most by an HC opponent all season, and Harvard's season worst.

I think HC will need another hot shooting night to win. If we keep 'em off the glass, and shoot an average night, this should be a W.

This is the kind of game where the opposing coach tells his team they can win by beating US on the boards. They come out all fired up and have a half-time lead. Then we assert ourselves in the second half with defense and rebounding and win by, like, 6.
