Stephane Lasme measured 6 ft 5.5 inches for the NBA draft. One of the best big men UMass ever had.

When I read Calipari had recruited some guy by the name of Harper Williams who was 6'6" to play center, I thought, "No way, the guy is too small! There are guards in the A10 that are 6'6!"" So I was wrong, once.

As for Lasme, I've seen photos of him and Rashaun Freeman together. Freeman was listed at 6'8" or 6'9". Stephane was almost as stall as Rashaun. No way was he 3 or 4" shorter than Freeman. Unless Freeman is only 6' 6'" or 6'7"?

Of course. The team heights are always inflated a couple of inches. Rasaun's height as measured by the NBA would be more like Lasme's.

Freeman measured 6'-6" without shoes for the draft.

Gee, all these years I've always wished I was a bit taller, you know, 6'2" or maybe even 6'3". All this time it turns out the answer to this desire was to have a UMass assistant coach measure me? :) But, it wouldn't help me jam; I've always wanted to be able to dunk too. :(

I was watching Wimbledon this morning (I love summer vacation!) and they were commenting about Federer's success against the very tall players. They showed a list of the tallest players he has played, and they ranged from 6'11" to 6'6". Then the commentator, Brad Gilbert, says, "Those are real heights, not basketball heights. If you want to do basketball heights, you have to add a couple of inches."

We've added Djery Baptiste, a 6'10" junior who will arrive in December after graduating from Vanderbilt where he averaged 2.4 points and 2.6 rebounds while playing approx. 11 minutes per game. He'll bring some size and experience to UMass.

Definitely changes the discussion earlier in this thread about our lack of bigs. On the other hand, it seems many of the recent A-10 transfers were bigs: GW got the 7'3" guy from Georgetown. Dayton got the 6'11" guy from Nebraska, and (going back a couple months) VCU got a big man too.

Because I am stuck at an airport (and also a little deranged) and I can't find an episode of Mama's Family streaming anywhere (RIP Ken Berry!), I thought I'd waste some time looking at how some of the kids we didn't get are doing this year. Some names we were linked to more than others and I'm sure I'm missing some, and numbers don't obviously tell too much of a story, but this is what I've got:

Kyle Lofton, SBU: 35 MPG, 14 PPG, 4 APG, 48% FG, 43% 3FG
Neftali Alvarez, Fairfield: 33 MPG, 15 PPG, 4 RPG, 4 APG, 44% FG, 30% 3FG
Kevin Easley, Chattanooga: 28 MPG, 15 PPG, 6 RPG, 44% FG, 37% 3FG
Dominick Welch, SBU: 30 MPG (in 4 games), 7 PPG, 38% FG
Jamarius Burton, Wichita State: 23 MPG, 5 PPG, 3 RPG, 3 APG, 40% FG
Brendan Adams, UConn: 14 MPG, 3.5 PPG, 33% FG
Dima Zidor, Weber State: 7 MPG, 3 PPG< 3 RPG
Omar Silverio, URI: 10 MPG, 1 PPG
Sloan Seymour, Siena: This guy takes the stretch 4 to a whole new level... he is 6-9 and averaging 26 MPG, 10 PPG. 24 of his 27 baskets are threes, all but 6 of his attempts are threes. He has a total of 7 rebounds in 8 games. Don't think we were recruiting him too hard, but I can't get over these stats.
Frankie Policelli, Dayton: played a total of 3 minutes
Josh Mballa, Texas Tech: he's played a total of 17 minutes
Robert Braswell, Syracuse: played a total of 19 minutes
Luis Rodriguez: he's played 37 minutes.
Anthony Higgs, Illinois: hasn't played
Matt Balanc, Quinnipiac: hasn't played
Wyatt Walker, NC State (grad transfer): 20 MPG, 6 PPG, 3.5 RPG
Javan White, Clemson (grad transfer): 10 MPG, 2 PPG, 3 RPG

Going from America East to the ACC is a really big jump to make with only 1 off-season to adjust. Of course, it depends on what the transfer wants to accomplish, but in my opinion someone like Cremo would be wise to go to an A10 or AAC team where he can be the #2 option on a good team, like UMass. I think someone like Cremo has the potential to push UMass to be an NCAAT team in 2018-19.
I certainly got it wrong about how good UMass would be, but I think I kind of nailed it on Cremo... averaged 16 minutes and 4 points a game for Villanova.

Chartouny averaged 15 minutes and 3 points a game for Marquette.

I bet Lamar Kimble is going to fair similarly at Lousiville next season.

^ Twentyfive cents, unless you have a transfer.
