2018 Recruiting needs and potential recruits
Re: 2018 Recruiting needs and potential recruits
Painful to hear. 'Wanted to commit to UMass, but UMass wouldn't take his commitment.'

I think the broadcaster had it wrong.MikeUMA wrote: ↑Sun Mar 10, 2024 10:54 pm
But the much bigger whiff is Buie. Buie cashed in on the COVID-bonus year, and has racked up over 2100 points in the process. Their Senior Night broadcast worked in a mention of how UMass pulled his offer.

Someone in UMassTwitter said that the timing also coincided with Tony Bergeron sending his pack of Woodstock dudes to UM, and working himself the assistant job in the process, and Buie might have gotten squeezed out in the process. Well, a lot of good that did us in the long term.
Buie committed to Northwestern in September 2018, long before Bergeron was on the scene at UMass. As I recall being told from that time period, UMass did not pass on Buie, he passed on UMass.

I assumed the timing I was reading was correct. Bergeron was on the scene well before he was hired. Tre and TJ signed in March of 2019. Bergeron was likely contacted in the fall of 2018 and the deal was already in motion for him and Tre to arrive in Amherst for 2019. The timing may have been coincidental. Tre was being recruited since 2017.TheOFFSeason wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 1:38 pmThis is correctNilesGold wrote: ↑Mon Mar 11, 2024 8:35 pmI think the broadcaster had it wrong.MikeUMA wrote: ↑Sun Mar 10, 2024 10:54 pm

I don't believe Bergeron was on the scene before the 2018-19 season started. I suspect McCall started having conversations with him after the season got underway and it became clear that McCall needed to make a huge change.minutefanjsf wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 7:05 pmI assumed the timing I was reading was correct. I don’t know for sure. I wouldn’t put it passed Tony to have reached out as school started in September. Like I said, the timing could be coincidental. It is very close. UMass offered Tre way back in 2017. Tony was Tre’s coach for those two years.NilesGold wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 7:34 pmI don't believe Bergeron was on the scene before the 2018-19 season started. Re: 2018 Recruiting needs and potential recruits
What's evident to me, is that McCall didn't refuse to accept Buie's commitment in the fall of 2018, and Bergeron had no bearing on Buie's recruitment for better or worse.minutefanjsf wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 7:55 pm I don’t know for sure. The 6’ 11 “ kid from URI is in the portal ! He looks like he could help !
Re: 2018 Recruiting needs and potential recruits
He shot 38 percent on free throws. Other than that, he looks good though.
I hoping for Cross and Cohen to return, DHS too.

My money is on Cross not coming back. To much downside for him to return. He's now a known commodity and really not much more to prove at the collegiate level.
Far more risk of him being injured if he comes back and ruining any longer term professional hoops plans.

Does he really want to go to a 4th school though? He was at Louisville and Miami where he wasn't wanted, and at UMass, he's a game changer and wanted by the team and fans. Recognition goes a long way.UMass'96 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 4:20 pm My money is on Cross not coming back. To much downside for him to return. If I had to guess today I would say he's coming back. Cohen and Cross are "brothers". I can see, win or lose, they get everyone together at the end of the year and they run it back again next year. I'm by no means overlooking these next few days but I have to believe these guys realize what a great year they had this year, the top recruiting class in the A-10 coming in next year and have to believe they will be the favorite to win the A-10 next year. You get another offseason in the weight room for all these guys and if they all take the same leap as Diggins and Keon did - man it could be a special year.UMass'96 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 4:20 pm My money is on Cross not coming back. I love that Curry that made 1st team All-Rookie, but deep down was hoping he didn't. I'm sure all the scouts know how good he is, but this just makes him standout a little more. Hopefully they win the A-10, then win a game or two in the NCAA or make a deep NIT run and it'll make him want to come back and see what happens next year.
