2017-2018 Season

Post by eldonabe » Tue Mar 21, 2017 2:31 pm

Ok then - now we can start up the talk for next season!

Priority 1 - assess and minimize (if prudent) transfers out.

IMO - unless Kelsey has a recruit in his pocket to join us - I would honestly like to see every single player come back including Coleman if he is physically able to play.

FRESH START - it is a new day in Amherst!

Amen. Very important now for the administration to get the team together, talk about the hire, and get Kelsey here as soon as possible to do the same and work on keeping everyone.

I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!
Kelsley ooks like a great great hire. Got great 3 pt shooting, pace, and defense out of his Winthrop teams. What more can you ask? Oh, marketing? Yeah, he did that, too. (Was a marketing major at Xavier.)
AND we have the news that Deeky and Brison really like Amherst and want to stick around. I think if that happens, the rest of the freshmen will follow suit.
The future couldn't look rosier! Way to go, Ryan Bamford! And whoever the hell hired Ryan Bamford!

The words I most want to see/hear next are:

Chris Baldwin is staying right here in Amherst.

I want them all to stay, but I truly feel that this guy will be mentioned in the same breath and Roe, Weeks, and Harper Williams when all is said and done....

Sounds like Kelsey likes to play fast and shoot the 3 ball which should gel with all of the guys on the roster. I want Kelsey to keep whoever he wants to keep, hopefully everyone. If he doesn't think a guy is a fit and they want to transfer then so be it. This team should have enough talent to be top half of the A-10 next year with no major player losses and a little structure.

Because I think this should have been an 18 or 19 win team this year, I think we win 22+ games next year and be on the bubble. My only concern is that Kelsey loves the 3 and right now we are built as an inside team. That being said he might actually make them practice. I don't want to shit on DK, because I like the guy a lot, but i heard again this weekend from a totally separate source that practice was basically a shoot around.

^Kelsey does love the 3, but I think he's a smart enough and good enough coach to adjust his system if he doesn't have the shooting he wants in year 1. He, also, seems like a much more fundamental guy than DK and should be able to make our guys into better than average shooters. Lewis, Pipkins and CJ all have shots that look like they good become very solid shooters. Of all our guys, DJ has the most non-traditional looking shot.

Woah woah woah...lets pump the breaks a bit here. 22+ wins? Doesn't that seem like a bit much? Just because you take a group of young, talented players and put them with a coach that...lets say that actually knows how to coach...doesn't mean you automatically have a 22+ win team.

On the topic of practice being a total shoot around, from what I have heard and what we have seen on the court I would say this was true to a certain extent and DK demanding a day in day out grind in practice wasn't the status quo.

It's definitely going be a different experience for the guys in practice, and getting used to Kelsey's system will take some time. The non-conference schedule is going be tough. We're seeing what Frank Martin is doing with South Carolina. Alabama has the 6th ranked recruiting class coming in. Providence and Harvard will both be good again. Georgia and BYU won't be cake walks. Fortunately the rules in the NCAA allows coaches to work and practice with the guys a lot more than they used to prior to October.

By the time conference play comes around the guys should be grasping the system better and I could see us being a top 6 team. It was a down year this season in the A10, some of the top teams are losing seniors, and only VCU has a top 25 class coming in (that's if they all still come). This probably should be an NIT team, and an NCAA team in years 2 and 3 (junior and senior years for this strong class of 2020). What I do believe is that Kelsey will have a team that's capable of going on a run in DC and winning the auto-bid.
Hire Matt McCall!
