Matty V reports speaking to coach McCall on the phone and hearing that Malik wants to go closer to home

I seem to recall someone posted here that McCall knew Hines would likely transfer in 2018 and Hines told McCallt that when he was hired..or I imagined I read that...or the person who posted it took a wild guess and ended up being correct. Either way it's not a huge surprise but it is disappointing. He would have got a lot of playing time next season. I wonder if LIU is a possibility.

Always disappointing when someone leaves. I liked what we saw this year from Malik, thought he really grew in the face of some tough odds. I wish him the best. He's a UMass Grad, he's one of us.

Really bummed about this but with the new rules we're going to have to get accustomed to more and more of this. Thought Malik could have had a third team all conference type of year next year too. He has so much talent and DK totally misused him but he gave it his all this year and I'll always root for the kid.

Good luck to Malik! I like the grad transfer rule. I like that Malik Hines has the ability to play somewhere else for a year.

Surprised and somewhat disappointed that Malik chose to leave UMass. He was a starter last season, so it wasn't a lack of minutes. Probably would have started next season too. Arguably, after Holloway became academically ineligible, and Turner-Morris's and Baldwin's injuries, Milik was the only size we had on the floor. No reason was given for his transferring other than he may have missed friends and family back home in Mississippi.

Best wishes to Malik. Sorry to lose him but he's doing what he feels is best for him. MM seems prepared for this and we'll move on.

Really glad Malik played for UMass and stuck around through the coaching change; I agree it was a good change for him. I hope his development under McCall helps him get picked up by a good team close to home so he can make it into the tourney.

On the flip side, I'm bummed he's leaving. Besides being a good A-10 player, Hines would have helped with building stability in the program.

That would be a joke if he went to LIU. That is not "closer to home" and a big step down in team and conference - especially when coming off of a huge improvement this season.
In Matt McCall I trust!

Really impressed with Maliks improvement over the past few years especially losing the stone hands he had as a Freshman. Listening to the radio when driving home from the bill, Malik always impressed us with his post game interviews and I am sure he will be a success post college. Time for someone else to step up!

He would have left last year if he wanted to go to LIU.
If he left last year he would have had to sit out a year and only had 1 year of eligibility left. Staying one year longer meant he got to play 2 years.

Mixed feelings. I wish Malik well, but I don’t see how transferring for one season does him any good.

Last year it allowed Coleman, Clark and Lewis the opportunity/experience to play in the tournament. Same for Gordon (a thhird trip) a few years back. So there's that.

I think it could be good for him off the court as in maybe he's ready for a change in scenery and ready to be closer to home. On the court, he can probably find a place that suits him just fine as well.

My response was to Malik telling MM before the season that he was most likely going to grad transfer before the season. I was told this in September at a workout and completely forgot about it until I saw MH leave.
