Marcus Camby

Post by harbo » Sun Nov 14, 2010 11:28 pm

With the encouraging news of Gary Forbes and the hope that the Celtics wise up and bring up Stephane Lasme, I decided to check up on what Mr. Camby has been doing with his career. So here's a quiz to see if you've been paying attention to a pretty impressive NBA career:

In his 13 years and 11 games in the NBA, he's played in 842 games.

Over/under on number of teams played for: 4
Over/under on points scored: 8600
Over/under on rebounds: 8300
Over/under on FG %: .492
Over/under on FT %: .667
Over/under on assists-to-turnover ratio: 1.0
Over/under on three-pointers made: 43
Which number is higher: Blocked shots or personal fouls
Over/under on double-doubles: 250
Over/under on triple-doubles: 14
Does he own a career double-double?
Over/under on this year's salary: $10,749,832

not sure on most of these, but Camby has had a pretty stellar career. There is a reason i got him for my fantasy team. Always helps out in the blocked shots and rebounding categories, plus he's doesn't turn the ball over much. Definitely think he's underrated in the NBA.

Can't find career earnings, but a few places mention $8 - $10 mil a year over the past several years. ESPN reports this year to be $1 milllion higher than the 11.7 I mention above.

The actual career numbers aren't as important as the general conclusion that he has maintained an effective presence in the NBA for over thirteen years now, a long time by NBA standards.

Here are the answers for the stats lovers:

5 teams (over)
8738 points (over) Average of 10.4 per game
8411 rebiunds (over) Average of 10.0 (although the sharper minds out there will see that he is 9 rebounds short of exactly 10.0 reb per game.
FG% of .471 (under) But not too shabby
FT% of .679 (over) We could use that kind of percentage around these here parts.
Nice assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.3 (1618/1239) (over) was a pleasant surprise to me.
Three pointers made is 16 (in 82 attempts) (waaaay under) was a big surprise to me.
Blocked shots is 2158 (2.6 per game) vs 2419 PF (2.9). The comparison means nothing, except that most NBA players would not be anywhere near that close.
Double-doubles is 260 (over)
Triple doubles is 4 (under) That number surprised me a lot.
Does he own a career double-double? Depends on how the NBA rounds their stats. I vote yes.
And like I said, add a million to the number I posted above.

Also found that his mom and sisters were held hostage in a home invasion in Hartford in 2001.

And I read that that his daughter was born in 2007 at 24 weeks and weighed 1.5 pounds. After a long hospital stay, she went home healthy.

Regarding the A/TO ration, Marcus was always a good passer.

Marcus doesn't have a degree Julius finished up via UWW and was awarded an honorary Doctorate too. Maybe he can finish uop after he retires from the NBA.

From the Globe:
You can’t tell UMass fans their team didn’t crush Georgetown in the East Regionals and didn’t go to the 1996 Final Four. They weren’t hallucinating. But the results officially have been “vacated’’ because it was learned that Marcus Camby had taken money and jewelry from an agent. Let the NCAA re-write history. Massachusetts 86, Georgetown 62. That’s what UMass fans always will remember.

Bob has, for the most part, always treated UMASS well. Good comment there.

Wouldn't that be like Michigan retiring Webber's Jersey?

Not gonna happen unless he comes back and finishes (and pays for) his degree.

It'll be interesting to see how Marcus winds down his NBA career. Last I saw (April 2010), he was signed with the Blazers thru the end of 2011-12. He'll be 38 by then.

ESPN says he's making just under $12 million this season. Good for him and his family.

Not really, seeing as Camby wasn't banned from affiliation with the university for any period of time.

With that said, I also think Webber has gotten a raw deal.

I am on the fence about the degree part at this point.
