Chaz Williams bio is online at http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/player/pr ... erId=46445.

I think one 5'9" point guard is enough on a team, but maybe that's just me.

I have no problem with it, but not if they're in the same year. In other words, when this guy became eligible, he'd be a sophomore, just like Traynham. I'm also not too impressesd with his over shooting shooting percentage of 37%.

3 of our freshman this year were 38% and under. Not to mention this guy would have led the team by a wide margin on 3%. Bring him in.

Get a few more of these guys and we could be a power in the under 6-foot league if it still exists --

Not just you, especially when they would be in the same playing class by the time Chaz's transfer rule lets him play again. We don't need doppelgängers.

According to Adam Zagoria, Former Hofstra guard Chaz Williams will take an unofficial to Seton Hall today, an official to UMass Mon & Tues & unofficial next week to RU (Rutgers). - http://twitter.com/AdamZagoria

While I know some of you have mentioned apprehension about having two smallish point guards on the roster, particularly since they will both be in the sophomore class in 2011/2012, I think Chaz would be an important get.

In my opionion UMass has a chance to have their breakthrough season in 2011/2012. That roster will have:

at the 5:

Sean Carter, Sr.
Max Esho, So.

at the 4:

Terrell Vinson, Jr.
Raphiel Putney, So.
David Laurey, FR. ???

at the 2/3

Freddie Riley, Jr.
Jesse Morgan, So. ???
Javorn Farrell, Jr.
Sampson Carter, Jr.

at the 1

Daryl Traynham

Bud Gaffney, Trey Lang and Matt Hill should just essentially be roster filler and fouls to give at this point.

The 2/3/4 position has lots of interchangeable parts and some pretty strong talent.

I am excited about the prospects of Traynham at the 1, but we'll need another pg on the roster. While Farrell and maybe even Morgan can bring some ball handling, I do not view either as a pure 1.

Based on the need at the pg, I like the idea of bringing in Williams. It will give him a year to learn the UMass system, so that in 2011/12 he should be able to make a bigger impact than an incoming freshman may be able to make. Additionally, it provides Traynham insurance. I have all the faith I can have in Traynham, but I have never seen him play at the D1 level, so the jury is somewhat out. Essentially, he makes us better for this particular season (2011/2012) where we may be pretty good.

If we can land Williams, I'll feel much better about this roster at the 1-4 positions for 2011/12. I like Sean Carter as a 5 for that season, but that's an area that will need some depth and I imagine will be a focus of recruiting (along with just upgrading talent across the board). If Mass can bring in a freshman 5 man who can play 15-20 minutes a game and develop in 11/12, watch out.

Edit: Added Laurey above.

Strangely misinformed post for you, BT.
Putney will never play the 4. He's a 3 through and through.
And Bud Gaffney in the same breath as Hilll and Lang? The latter two guys are true Div 1 players. Not Gaffney.
As for Chaz, we can agree to disagree.

If Putney can put on some weight, he will absolutely see time at the 4.

If Matt Hill and Trey Lang play any meaningful role in 2011/2012 the team will be in trouble. That's why I lumped those two with Gaffney. No disrespect meant to Trey and Matt, but I just wanted to make sure I had the whole roster noted in my previous post. That said, I did forget one player, 6-8 David Laurey who will also factor in at a big spot.

I agree that Putney may be a 2/3, but when you look at the roster he may be out there at the 4 at some times. Esho probably isn't a 5 either. Bottom line Vinson and Sean Carter will not be playing 40 minutes a game. With the size of Esho, Putney, Laurey and maybe even Sampson Carter you may see situations with a point guard and 4 other solid players on the floor regardless of position. At the same time there will need to be some height on the floor. I will not be surprised to see either Putney, Sampson Carter, Laurey and/or Esho on the court when only one of either Vinson or Sean Carter are on the court. True impact bigs (4/5) are toughest to recruit at this level.

My biggest point is, we need another point guard for 2011/2012 since Correia will have graduated. I would rather have a guy (Williams) on the roster that’s been with the team for a year's worth of practice/workouts/weight training than relying on a freshman pg to play a primary backup role to Traynham. Williams also provides insurance on Traynham who none of us have seen play at the D1 level. If Traynham was ever injured or did not live up to the hype/potential the Mass will be searching for a pg real fast in 11/12. 11/12 has a chance to be a very good team, and I just do not want to put my eggs in the basket of having to potentially rely on a freshman backup/second point guard.

I am excited about 2010/2011, but at the same time I temper my excitement and expectations because it is difficult to rely on a freshman point to lead a team. Plus, although many do not want to hear it, we will be relying on all second year (I do not count Hill, Gaffney, or Lang)players (with exception of Correia). I suspect Traynham will start from day 1 and he will have ups and downs. All freshman do and while I am excited about Traynham that's a lot of pressure. Traynham for all the hype and expectations we've placed on him was not a McDonald's All-American. By Daryl's sophomore year, hopefully 30 games of experience, training and a year of college will do him well. Add that experience with our then junior class and Sean Carter (Sr.) and I think 2011/2012 has a chance to be the team that brings this program back to the level where we aspire to be.

Sounds exactly like Traynham, for better or worse. I suppose it's makes for better team chemistry when you get the same thing regardless of which player is in the game.

Regarding Laurey, from what I've heard, he won't be eligible to play or practice with the team this coming year.

never pass up talent. It sounds like he has talent because those are pretty good numbers for a frosh. Big deal if he's the same size as traynham. He's proven he can do it at the college level. Plus a full 40 mins of point guards going 100mph will be tough to defend. Also shooting 39% from 3 isnt so bad.

Yup. If guys can play and play well, go get 'em. Let the competition settle who plays how much. And as OC always says, the roster changes every year due to circumstances we don't/can't expect, so get as much talent as we can

The fact that Chazz is coming for an official visit raises the question of scholarships. Either another one is opening up, or there is no scholly for Jesse Morgan and David Laury next year. Which is kinda what I was expecting. I see this whole recruitment of Chazz as DK's attempt to use that last scholly efficiently. He doesn't have any freshmen prospects lined up so he's looking at some of these transfers and other oddball situations.

Personally, I'd rather see him hang on to the scholly and bring in a freshman point guard next year. Then there would be no question of who is the leader. I'm a little concerned that DK's recruitment of this guy suggests that he isn't confident he can get a good freshman point for the next year. But I may be reading too much into it. I remember how many transfers TF brought in trying to turn the program around.
