Very enjoyable game.
Most everyone looked good. Great game from AA, 21 pts, 6 asst, 6 boards, 1TO. Lee looks very good on D, much more confident from last year. Freeman is the next UMass Warrior. Ty, Lou, Harper and others would all be proud. I can't get over how quick this team can be with AA, Bowers and Maxwell on the floor. All three look very comfortable with each other and all three have a great first step. Lasme looked pretty good. Still got to hone his skills, but I think he may develop into a very good player.
Turnovers were tough, and the team started out playing poor perimeter defense. Defense picked up as the game went along though.
Couple of other observations:
Big Deli was in da house.
Does the Mullins really have to punish those who arrive early by parking them out by the Parking Services trailer? I walked through about 6 rows of empty spaces after the game to get to my car.

The team looked good in a nice win to start things off. AA, Gabe, Free, Art, Mo Max - all these guys looked good, played hard. REBOUNDING !!!! Oh My God this team Rebounded - what a beautiful thing. The Mullins Center Ghosts are smiling tonight...Youth movement looks good and Lappas had all the right things to say. Very encouraging start to the season.
George Miller was superb on the PBP.

Gabe Lee is awesome! What else can I say? The man dominated on defense. There were times a St. Francis player got the ball with only Lee between him and the basket....and he'd pull the ball out. The 7 blocks were only part of the story. He alters shots. He intimidates! He also appears to have gotten stronger over the summer. Two of his dunks were through guys.
AA getting 21 points in only 30 minutes along with 6 assists against only 1 turnover.
Freeman was impressive with 11 points and 14 rebounds. It seemed like he had more rebounds then that!
When's the last time UMass had two guys get double figures in rebounds in the SAME game.
Hopefully, the students that were there will be able to convince their friends that a trip to the Bill is worth it.
This team is fun to watch. So far so good!!

Art Bowers hit one or two threes. I can't recall any others off the top of my head from the rookies. In general though, we didn't shoot many threes today. The perimeter players looked to either drive or feed it inside, which was a great strategy to have against a team like St. Francis.
One positive thing I've noticed about the rookies, and the rest of our perimeter players, is that they love to drive and attack the basket. They play very fearlessly. That's something that I think has been somewhat lacking in the recent past.

Whoa. Too bad. That has top be the smallest crowd ever at the Bill for a regular season game. Wish I lived close to UMass, as I would attend most if not all of the games.MassMan06 wrote:Attendance was 2,089 for those who were wondering.
Kind of odd since they drew 1,912 for the game against Playaz.

Got to like what happened last night. This seems like a team.Newcomers better rhan expected.Appears to be a good mix. I think fans should be excited. Evidentally, the Globetrotters close game was not an accident. This may be a good team.Maybe less problem players and less big egos.I would say watch out Texas Tech.
