Re: State of the program

One thing I seem to recall is that many if not most of our successful transfers in the past needed a year to shake off the rust. So what we're seeing this year, with so many transfers joining, might in part be a result of that combined with integrating some of the other new faces. Hopefully, along w...

Re: Head coaching options

It was a timing issue. Wish we could get him as DC. Salary would be double what he's making at Maine (150k vs at least 300k at UMass). Doubt he would leave to be the DC at UMass but you never know ...Really did want him to be the next head coach. Oh well, go Bell! I'm not convinced of either, he ju...

Re: Walt Bell

The first guy that came to my mind, as far as a youngish successful head coaching hire to compare to at about our level, is PJ Fleck when he was hired over at WMU. I looked up his resume at the time he was hired there, and, if I saw correctly, it looks like he did not even have experience as a coord...

Re: Walt Bell

I'm kind of surprised by this hire, though not necessarily in a negative way. I figured we would hire a somewhat under-the-radar head coach with a successful track record from the lower ranks, but instead it's a relatively successful coordinator from a big-time program (but no head coaching experien...

Chill out. I don't think most are disputing that upgrading to FBS was a reasonable decision (and I think most on here agree it should have even been done much much earlier), just that it isn't necessarily clear it has a causation effect with regard to applications numbers.

Re: Head coaching options

If the rumors were true, Don Brown was interested in the job after Molnar was let go a few years back, but Whipple was the favored candidate. Obviously, circumstances have changed since then with Brown now being a coordinator at Michigan. I think the main thing that would keep him from coming back i...

Re: Head coaching options

However his colleague and former Umass employee ashamed Waldron would be a good HC and might bring Liam as an OC which would give him the experience to possibly be second in line for HC if Waldron were successful. Well, I would argue that the best candidates would not have anything to be ashamed of...

Re: Head coaching options

Liam is one of the architects for the Rams offense. He might to tough to lure away as well.... He’s an offensive assistant right now, its very low on the totem pole. The guy doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page. Going from his role to head coach would be huge. Agreed. There's definitely a tendency ar...

Re: Whip Gone?

^ Except that your analysis seems to ignore how poor a financial model FCS football is. FCS was no more sustainable for UMass, and the upside is/was significantly lower than FBS. My condolences about the Whipple firing by the way, I understand you are a huge supporter of his and it stinks for you (a...

Re: Whip Gone?

I'd love to see some of the infrastructural issues around the UMass football program improved, from coaching salaries to facilities to a great conference affiliation. But I'm not convinced any of those things kept us from winning 6-7 games this season. ... I agree with most of that. Actually, I'd s...

Re: Whip suspended

The comment was insensitive and ill-timed, however, personally, I think he is getting more than enough heat for it. What he said wasn't smart, but not made with malice, and I would bet that many many athletics coaches, even professional coaches and players, have made similar comments at some point t...

Re: 2018 - Game 4: @ FIU 9/15

Similar despairing comments were made about basketball and hockey, after being in the doldrums for a long time. But again, a good coaching hire can do wonders. The flip side of that is the wrong choice puts you in the hole for another 4-5 years. In any case, I see no reason UMass can't be successful...

Re: 2018 - Game 4: @ FIU 9/15

Perennially pathetic programs have been able to turn it around with good coaching. That's where it has to start. Bamford will have to make the right call. I'm OK leaving it in his hands, it's the best shot we've got. Agreed. Bamford has a pretty good track record so far in picking good coaches (at ...

Re: Head coaching options

You think Maine pays its head coach that much? I haven't looked, but I doubt it. There are likely many good potential coaches out there that we wouldn't have to pay big 10 level salaries.
