OBG, I'm pretty sure Paco doesn't count as one of the 13. As a walk on, he doesnt count as a scholarship athlete. Also, I thought it had already been established that Carrier is ineligible.

I am pretty sure we have at least 2 left for this upcoming recruiting season. As it stands at this moment, I'm pretty sure we only have one for next yr...with Cox graduating and Carrier suiting up, we'll have 12 scholarship players (13 is the max). Which brings me to my next question...what kind of...

Nice article from MV on this kid. It sounds like he could be a good player for us.

Also, I don't know whether Briggs is here or not next season but here is an interesting quote: "It was a complete fluke," Lappas said. " We were looking at kids for the next (2004-05) year , and we saw this kid play at the College of New Jersey. I didn't know anything about him."...

From Masslive: "He's very athletic, he can shoot, and he runs like the wind," Lappas said. "We called his guardian and checked out his academic records. He's a good student who wants to major in biology, and is eligible to play this season." http://www.masslive.com/umassbasketbal...

My guess is that the only place this guy is "hearing" this rumor from is the voice in his head. If I remember correctly, some a-hole made a new name a few months ago so that he could promise us that Briggs would be in the police log the next week (which he wasnt), and then quietly crawled ...

Chandler? I think you mean Chadwick. And I believe the scholarship max is 13, so we did have one more. I assumed we'd wait till next yr to use the remaining one, but I'm thinking Lappas must have found a gem, considering that he was saying a few months ago that we were leaning towards being done wit...

I believe Briggs is originally from Berkeley. Your description of him sounds about right. Pretty strong looking build, slender but has big guns. I can't wait to see him play next season.

Re: Saliva Test for UMass Dreamers

The problem is that, Bob Meers aside, the "leaders" at UMass are career bureaucrats. And, by definition, a bureaucrat's raison d'etre is to perpetuate his/her bureaucracy. Thus, Lombardi and Ian what's his name are going to go about this "seemingly impossible" task (transforming...

All you skeptics bring up some good points, but if fans are already naysaying this idea before it has even been given a opportunity to work, then it is probably doomed to failure from the start. Sure it will be a challenge, but people who say "we can't do it" are only adding to the obstacl...

I agree with the above posts. Whether this effort succeeds or not, it is a great course of action by Lombardi and McCaw. When UMass's leaders take initiative like this, the fans, students, and alumni are much more likely to get involved. Go UMass.

This is what kind of concerns me. The Big East hoops schools may not want us if we are an aspiring football school. It is an intriguing situation.

Good points, Quinn. But what happens if we end up going for the non football route? Isn't our new athletic dept.'s financial success dependent upon the football program? It almost seems like we have to go for the upgrade now, rather than looking into a non football conference.
