Sounds right, JJ. Wasn't this during the controversy (the first controversy, not the Gray Wolves controversy) over the Minuteman?

I don't remember which game it was, but wasn't it at the Mullins?

That's a very good point. Cal never scheduled a Top 10 caliber opponent until his fourth season vs. Oklahoma (he had to give them a 2-for-1 to get the game in Springfield). He waited until he knew he'd have the horses to compete. Right now we're trying to reinvent the wheel, so I can't blame Lappas ...

Also got my renewal application. I see that in recognition of the recent abysmal student attendance, they are reorganizing the student seating and making Section U (center court behind the benches) available to season ticket holders. Still, $270 per seat, although the same as last year, is going to ...

You're absolutely right. I guess it's just a marketing dilemma ... how many people who remember that Julius wore #32 at UMass would pay that kind of money for an authentic replica? People our age (and/or weight) don't tend to buy hoops jerseys.

Excellent point. The Mullins Center may be the only arena in the country with two retired 32s hanging from the rafters.

UMass never had names on the uniform backs until the 1993-94 season. But what good is a Dr. J memento if it only has Number 32 on the back?

I agree. It's one thing to be a realist. It's another to keep restating the obvious, ad nauseum.

Or Lou Roe for that matter. As often happens with some very good college athletes, a lot of the aforementioned players were tweeners who were too small or too slow for their preferred positions in the NBA.

I think you're referring to Ed McAleney. He did play for the Stampeders but I don't think it was anywhere close to 15 years.

For purposes of eligibility, Meers and Morin were seniors in the 1965 season. which was Landry's sophomore year and the only year he played with them. That team lost to Maine in the first game but by the end of the season was good enough to have been competitive with the likes of BC and Syracuse. We...

I believe this is the way athletic departments are set up at most big-time state universities. It makes more sense than leaving the athletic program at the mercy of fluctuating economic cycles. But it has to be done right and requires a fund-raising and development effort that's far, far greater tha...

I think MAD was trying to say something like, other than the Indians, Custer fought a pretty good fight. Unfortunately we're heading toward a situation where the only schools with the resources to run championship caliber D-1 athletic programs, including basketball, will be those in BCS football con...
