Re: Bobby Powers

Just want the UMass basketball family to know that Bobby Powers passed away this afternoon.
May Bobby RIP. He wore his UMass gear with pride.

Bobby Powers

UMass Basketball is family and when one of us is having any health issues it’s always nice to have family to rely on. Bobby Powers was part of the very successful UMass teams back in the early 70’s. He worked extremely hard as the head manager and even at a time or two actually practiced with us. He...

Re: Erving-era uniforms

That Syracuse game was unbelievable. Julius had a game for the ages but the best part was in the locker room he didn’t act any different then any of us - that was how he was. No big deal we won and we were all happy. With Julius it was all about team. Couldn’t have played with a better guy. The othe...

Sam Provo

In times like these we could all use some help. Encouraging news for Sam, Liz and the Provo family. Sam has been fighting like the scrappy Agawam and UMass player he was in the late 60’s to get back after several surgeries and today was a good day. For those of you in Western Mass Channel 40 was at ...

Re: 2020-21 Season

I hung my converse up at the age of 62 from playing full court. My sons use to say “dad you’re going to get hurt playing full court with younger guys.” Now I just shoot around on a full court in my yard. As far as something final in the Cage I would like to see something honoring Julius and Al Skinn...

Sam Provo

UMass Basketball is a family and for those that remember the successful teams from the late 60’s and early 70’s one of our own Sam Provo has had some recent medical issues that he is now fighting thru. Sam played on the late 60’s teams with Julius Erving, Dennis Chapman, Billy Greeley, Bob Dempsey, ...

Re: KAEO: Tre Mitchell

It is fun watching Tre develop as the season progresses and he is hitting his stride and making the most of his opportunities. He has very good footwork and his 3 point shot is improving. He is under control and plays within the system. He plays hard and isn’t intimidated by double teams and is a go...

Re: Prayers for Lari Ketner

Great article and Lari was a warrior on the boards for UMass. Came to UMass at a time when we had heated rivalries with Philadelphia schools especially Temple and St. Joe’s . Took a great deal of courage to head to NE and leave the Philly area. Happy for his son and going to play @ Bryant is a great...

Re: Tony Bergeron

Been watching this situation play out and as a former player thought I’d give my 2 cents. UMass Basketball and UMass in general has always been looked down upon by the rest of the state and all the private and elite academic institutions in NE. To them we are that place out in Amherst and when we ha...

Re: Game 12, 2019-20: Maine (12/20)

Great to see the article on Senior Night vs Maine for the 74 team. It isn’t surprising to see them score over 100 points because we’d have a few games a year scoring over 100 (without the 3 point shot). Everyone on those teams could shoot. We were taught to take the highest percentage shot which mea...

Re: Julius Erving

it’s too bad people never got to see Julius really dunk. After practice some of the guys would stay afte the coaches went up and we’d mess around and take turns dunking - like we could ever compete with Julius but it was fun anyway. There was a player from LI Tommy Gilliam’s who was 6’6” and could a...

Re: Julius Erving

You are exactly right about the rest of the country not knowing about Julius. When I transferred from Tennessee to UMass I told my friends from NY about Julius and they said “he can’t be that good if he was he would have gone to StJohn’s or NC.” Remind you I had been at Tennessee which was ranked in...

Re: Julius Erving

Those teams with Julius developing each season were teams that played hard and played the right way or they wouldn’t play for Jack Leaman. Unselfish guys who played their roles and did what they had to do to win. No frills - grey t shirts and shorts (University PE issued to every PE students) - 2 pa...

Re: Game 8, 2019-20: at Rutgers (11/29)

Tough stretch here and South Carolina and Harvard will not be easy and seeing what Dayton, Richmond and URi are doing says things won’t get easier in league play. This is A young team with some good athletic players. When you go on the road it is difficult to win and young players especially struggl...

Re: Game 7, 2019-20: vs St. John's (Mohegan Sun, 11/24)

Tough loss. This is a young team that will only get better - there is a lot more to playing college basketball then athletic ability - it’s developing team chemistry and learning how to win by playing hard and smart. UMass has a great group of young players who need to know the fans appreciate them ...
