Re: State of the program

I don't know what to think, but it sure sounds like he has lost or is close to losing the team. It's probably another teardown. I find it interesting how Coach is creating some verbal separation between himself and his team with his word choices and grammatical usages. I couldn’t help but notice he...

Re: State of the program

I must not be insightful as I have never heard of this Argenal guy before. Based on these posts though, he sounded like a young Pitino minus the baggage, so I looked him up. His record as a head coach was 35-76 at Cal State. Maybe that's a dumpster fire of a job (I have no idea) but 35-76 is a dump...

Re: 2019 Recruiting

^ But we did get twelve 3-star recruits as rated by 247Sports Composite. Given all the recruiting things UMass has going against it, I'm pretty pleased with that (on paper). Thanks for th 247 data. I just checked and it looks like 247Sports rates 11 UMass signees as 3-star players. I agree I think ...

Re: BLOW IT UP

I like Mark Schmidt to but it is not happening. I would go get a guy like Gus Argenal at Nevada. He has seen how to win at a place that does not get top kids and has to use the transfer market. Preacher, Very insightful post. You obviously are a college hoops aficionado if you know about Art Argena...

Re: 2019 Recruiting

Welcome to UMass to all 20 new signees. Hopefully, there are some sleepers in this class that will emerge in 2-3 yrs. Looks like some good experiened guys coming in from the JC ranks and the LB from Penn State should add some competition for starting jobs and some depth. Nice to see 3 guys from in-st...

Re: State of the program

Updated RPI after the Fordham humiliation: 269... Rumor has it that Billy D called Coach MM after the game and once again assured him that "your team is close"...perhaps Coach MM was/is mistaken when he optimistically qoutes his mentor's assesment that UMass bball "is close"...too bad Coach doesn't ...

Re: Game 22, 2018-19: at Saint Joseph's (2/2)

I find it troubling that without any evidence some on this board, if not explicity saying it, are implying that one of the players on the team has committed a felony. To so casually throw out those "observations" is beyond contemptible. Pipkins is struggling with all the added attention paid to him...

Re: State of the program

McKinney, You are dead on my friend-1980 was the first year the NCAA published RPI's for D1 teams. As the "oldtimers" on this board are well aware the 1980's were not kind to us...archived RPI data for early 1980's UMass men's hoop teams: 1980: 255 out of 267 total teams 1981: 256 out of 264 total t...

Re: State of the program

Sad to report our current RPI is 259 (I don't recall our rating index being lower, perhaps sometime during the 1980's but I am not sure if the metric was in use/published back then)...next game-Fordham RPI 314...we cannot lose this game at home...hoping for the best, but frankly very worried about th...

Re: Game 21, 2018-19: at La Salle (1/30)

They looked lucky against URI. If those threes don't fall from Carl, there's nothing to suggest that scoring would have come from somewhere else. Baptiste has two left hands in the paint on offense. Laurent is playing less aggressive, Cobb looks like he is playing scared on a short leash, Pip looks...

Very nice feature/piece that appeared in today's San Francisco Chronicle sports section about Isabella...Gruden and the Raider organization love the guy (hopefully,he will land at a more stable organization than the mess in Oakland/Vegas called Raider Nation)...speaking of impressive, Izzy graduated...

Re: State of the program

I don’t get why everyone is so upset…rest assured, the great Billy D says “we’re close and right there”… “The conversation between McCall and his mentor served to re-affirm the work McCall has put in with the Minutemen thus far.“It sounds like we’re close, it sounds like we’re right there, just cont...

Re: UConn losing $40M a year on sports - cut sports?

To me, this discussion topic begs the question “what about the financial situation at UMass Athletics? Well, unfortunately, our finances are not much better than the situation in Storrs. UMass’ annual athletic operating budget generates a deficit of $37.2m (total $’s, fiscal 2017) i.e. the Universit...

Re: Walt Bell

Supposedly Don Brown helped with this search and recommended the new coach. If true, this is a very nice endorsement for Coach Bell...for the record, Don Brown and Coach Bell competed directly as DCordinator vs OCoordinator in Big10 games during 2016 and 2017...not great results for Maryland- 2016:...
