UMass Athletics - recap / notes
Daily Hampshire Gazette - recap
MHERST - When it became clear that the move of Ricky Harris to point guard was permanent, the University of Massachusetts senior called someone who had been there before.
After gaining national acclaim during his freshman and sophomore year, Stephen Curry of Davidson made the move from shooting guard to his team's primary ball-handler for the 2008-09 season. His improved ball-handling helped him move up in the NBA draft where he was selected seventh by Golden State in June.
Harris met Curry at Chris Paul's Summer Camp in 2008. The two remain in contact by phone, email, Facebook and Twitter and Harris sought his advice on changing positions.
"I'm good friends with him. I talk to him a lot. I asked him for a few pointers," Harris said. "He said, #Stay a scorer, but try to get everybody else involved.' It looked like a lot easier for him than it's been for me."
Harris will continue to use that advice tonight against Curry's alma mater as the Minutemen (6-6) play Davidson in North Carolina at 7 p.m.
Lately, the position transition has not affected Harris as much as his ankle injury. Harris missed the Dec. 11 game against Grambling State at the Mullins Center, and has played through the injury in the last two games against Memphis and Boston College when he has struggled shooting. He said the time off for Christmas came at a good time both physically and mentally.
"Being able to go home, get some rest and not practice helped me a lot," Harris said. "It's still bothering me, but it's not as bad as it was,"
He needs just three points to move into a tie with Harper Williams (1,534) for eighth on the UMass career scoring list.
"It was good to get away see my family and friends and get away from basketball for a little bit," Harris said. "Playing on this sore ankle has been kind of stressful.
Now he's ready to get back on the court. "I'm excited - I can't wait to start playing again," he said. "I just want to get back to 100 percent so I can be even better."
Davidson has had growing pains without Curry and opened the season with four straight losses to Butler, South Florida, La Salle and Penn State.
But things have come together of late. While the Wildcats are 5-8, they have won three of their last four games. The lone defeat was a 91-88 overtime loss to Cornell, which beat the Minutemen 74-61 on Nov. 18.
Freshman big man Jake Cohen leads Davidson in scoring (14.7 points per game) and is second in rebounding (5.1 rebounds per game).
The Wildcats have considerable size for a mid-major. In addition to the 6-foot-10 Cohen, Davidson has three other players at 6-foot-9.
They will likely match up with Minuteman sophomore Sean Carter, who likely will have some friends in the crowd.
Davidson, which is near Charlotte, is three hours away from Fayetteville, N.C., where Carter grew up. But it's much closer than anywhere else the Minutemen play this season and Carter is expecting several friends and family members in the crowd at Belk Arena.
"A lot of people will be able to come out and see me play that haven't been able to see me play in a while," Carter said.
While tonight's game might be a homecoming of-sorts for Carter, it is a road game for the rest of the Minutemen who have struggled on their opponents' courts this season.
The lone win for UMass as the visiting team came Dec. 5 against Holy Cross at the DCU Center in Worcester, where there were as many Minuteman fans as Crusader supporters.
"It's a big test for us. Anytime you go on the road in college basketball it's difficult," Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg said. "Davidson is playing its best basketball of the season. It's a difficult game."

AVIDSON, N.C. - In its final game of the 2000s decade, the UMass basketball team suffered a tough 63-61 loss at Davidson on Wednesday night. The Minutemen fell to 6-7 overall as they open the Atlantic 10 season vs. Fordham at the Mullins Center next Wednesday. The Wildcats, who have been to national postseason in each of the last four years, moved to 6-8. Ricky Harris led UMass with 21 points coming off the bench and Anthony Gurley added 17. In his state homecoming, Fayetteville native Sean Carter had a game-high 10 rebounds as the Minutemen outrebounded the Wildcats, 44-38.
J.P. Kuhlman (18 points) hit two free throws with 4.1 seconds left to give the Wildcats a 63-61 lead. UMass inbounded the ball and called timeout after moving the ball to the front court with 1.0 seconds left. Sean Carter fumbled an in-bounds pass but Gurley had a chance for a putback, but it rolled off the rim as the horn sounded.
Davidson used an 11-0 run to rally from down 49-47 with 10:28 left to build a lead as large as nine at 58-49 with 4:48 left in regulation. UMass didn't score for more than seven minutes late in the second half. The Minutemen rallied to tie the game with eight seconds left.
Jake Cohen's bank shot 3-pointer with 5:45 gave Davidson a 56-49 lead, the largest lead of the game in the first 35 minutes. It came after his hook shot with 6:30 left gave the Wildcats a four-point edge. Davidson would never relinquish the lead as UMass went cold from the floor as the Minutemen didn't score for more than seven minutes before a Harris lay-up-and-one with 3:40 left in the game, cut the score of 58-52 with 3:40 left.
Harris canned a 3-pointer with 2:27 left to cut the deficit to three, 58-55, but Brendan McKillop answered 15 seconds later with his own trifecta. Harris' runner with 52.7 seconds left made it a one possession game again, 61-59. He tied the game at 61 all on another lay-up.
Harris ended UMass' drought from the 3-point line (0-of-9 in the first half) with a bomb to give UMass a 42-40 lead with 13:47 left in the second and forcing Davidson to call timeout. Davidson had taken its first lead since 6-4 early in the game on a 3-pointer by J.P. Kuhlman 1:27 into the second half to give the Wildcats a 33-31 edge.
UMass' defense was solid limiting Davidson's top two scorers Cohen (14.7 ppg) and Will Archambault (11.2 ppg) to a combined eight points.
UMass held the lead for much of the first half as the Minutemen led 29-28 in a spirited first half. Both teams shot 34 percent from the floor in the first half as Harris had eight points to lead UMass and Bryant Barr had nine for the Wildcats. The teams were a combined 4-of-26 from beyond the arc (15 percent) in the first 20 minutes (UMass 0-of-9 and Davidson 4-of-17).
The Minutemen defense was stout as it held Davidson without a field goal for a span of 7:41 as UMass led 25-19 on a pair of Harris free throws with 3:31 left in the first. Those foul shots tied him for eighth all-time at UMass in career makes with Julius Erving.
After being stone cold from the floor, Davidson's Barr canned back-to-back 3-pointers to pull the Wildcats to within two points at 29-27 with 1:40 left. The Davidson had a chance to take the lead into intermission but Barr missed a trey with seconds left in the half.
UMass finished the 2000s with a record of 160-150. It is the third-most wins in a decade in school history. The record was set in the 1990s with a mark of 239-97. The second-most wins came in the 1970s with a mark of 170-98. In the 2000s, UMass made three trips to the NIT (2000, 2007 and 2008), winning the 2007 Atlantic 10 Regular-Season Championship.
The Minutemen host Fordham next Wednesday at the Mullins Center in the second half of a doubleheader as the UMass women host Harvard at 5 p.m. The men's game will tip around 7:30 p.m.

AVIDSON, N.C. - Missed opportunities in the first half and a missed layup at the buzzer doomed the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team Wednesday night.
Davidson freshman J.P. Kuhlman sank two foul shots with 4.1 seconds remaining to give Davidson a 63-61 victory.
Kuhlman, who led the Wildcats with 18 points, was fouled about 30 feet from the basket as Davidson pushed the ball upcourt after Minuteman guard Ricky Harris tied the score on a driving layup with 8.8 seconds remaining.
UMass guard Anthony Gurley's layup attempt at the buzzer rolled around the rim and fell out as time expired, leaving the Wildcats (6-8) with their fourth win in the past five games.
"They made two foul shots to win it, we missed a layup to tie it," said Minuteman coach Derek Kellogg, whose team fell to 6-7.
An 11-0 run by Davidson midway through the second half ended a string of eight straight possessions in which the teams traded the lead. The run was sparked by a 3-point bank shot from the top of the key by freshman Jake Cohen.
The Wildcats, who shoot 40 percent from behind the 3-point line, missed 12 of their first 14 long-range tries before Bryant Barr hit consecutive treys in the final two minutes of the half to pull Davidson within 29-28 at intermission.
Wildcats junior point guard Brendan McKillop picked up his second foul with 15 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the half and played just six first-half minutes.
But even with McKillop, who averages 32 minutes per game, on the bench, UMass could not extend its lead. The Minutemen enjoyed a six-point cushion but could never extend it, as Davidson fought its way back into the game.
"I thought we let an opportunity slip away," said Kellogg.
Harris agreed.
"I had good shots that didn't go in," said Harris, who finished 8-for-23 from the field.
Constant dribble penetration by Harris (21 points) and Gurley (17 points) led to inside baskets in the first half. But UMass was 0-for-9 from behind the 3-point line in the first-half which helped Davidson stay in the game.
UMass finished the game 3-for-16 from beyond the 3-point line, but had a 40-19 scoring advantage in the paint, constantly using dribble penetration to beat the Wildcats including the last drive by Harris.
"That was the game plan," Gurley said, "to make strong drives to the basket."
Davidson coach Bob McKillop, whose team started the season 0-4, praised the Minutemen, but was elated to escape with the victory.
"It was two tough teams refusing to relent," McKillop said. "They knocked us on our heels early, but we made big shots at key times. We had to take this game to win it. They weren't going to give it to us."
Brendan McKillop, the coach's son, had 10 of his 13 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer to stop a UMass rally that had cut a nine-point deficit to three with 2:16 remaining.
Harris, still not fully recovered from an ankle injury, hit for 10 points in the game's final 3:40 to help overcome a seven-minute scoring drought that saw Davidson turn a 49-47 deficit into a 58-49 advantage.
Harris, who now has 1,552 career points, passed Harper Williams and moved into eighth spot on the UMass all-time scoring list.
UMass is off for a week until it starts its Atlantic 10 schedule by hosting Fordham at 7:30 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
