MHERST - As the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team prepared for Sunday's game against Saint Louis, coach Derek Kellogg said he was not sure who would replace Javorn Farrell in the Minuteman starting lineup.
"The debate would be do I go with Sampson Carter and try to build his confidence a little bit to try to get him playing the way I need him to, or do I go with a more seasoned-guy like Gary Correia or Anthony Gurley?" Kellogg said. "I'm leaning toward going with Sampson."
Those three along with freshman guard Freddie Riley, who is already starting, figure to get more minutes in the game in Farrell's absence.
Farrell, who was suspended for throwing a punch in Wednesday's 66-60 loss at George Washington, will join injured teammate David Gibbs on the sidelines. Farrell's defense and ball-handling as well as his more intangible qualities will be missed when UMass plays the Billikens at 4 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
"Somebody is going to have to pick up the way he was playing," Kellogg said. "He was our glue guy and the guy that was bringing some toughness and the wherewithal to win basketball games. Not having him hurt us in the second half against GW and it hurts us that he's not playing Sunday."
Riley said the rest of the Minutemen need to elevate their games. "It's a big opportunity to show coach that we're ready to step up and take our games to the next level."
Saint Louis (17-8, 8-3 Atlantic 10) has won five games in a row and could possibly be sneaking into NCAA Tournament consideration. The selection committee has historically given favorable consideration to teams who lost games when a key player was injured, as long as he was healthy and available for the tournament.
Billikens freshman Cody Ellis wasn't injured for the first half of the season, he was sorting out eligibility questions. Since he became eligible for conference play, Saint Louis has gone 8-3, including signature wins over Dayton and Rhode Island in their last two games. The Billikens are tied for fourth in the conference with Charlotte.
Ellis has averaged 11.4 points and 6.1 rebounds, giving Saint Louis a third scoring option behind Kwamain Mitchell (16 points per game) and Willie Reed (11.7 points, 8.3 rebounds).
Tempo figures to be critical as Saint Louis wants to play slowly, while the Minutemen will try to push the ball to get easy looks.
The Billikens are 13th in the league in points scored at 63.4 per game, but second in scoring defense, allowing 59.2 points per game. Opponents are shooting just 38.9 percent from the field and 26.0 from 3-point range against them.
"If you get an open shot against them you better take it," Kellogg said. "But you better make sure it's a high-percentage shot and not a rushed bad shot, because that's really where they capitalize. They're not going to beat themselves." Saint Louis is the league's worst free-throw shooting team at 60.5 percent.
SCOREBOARD WATCHING - Four of the other six games in the Atlantic 10 this weekend could have some impact on the Minutemen's place in the standings.
At 4-8 (10-16 overall), UMass currently sits 10th in the conference with four games remaining. The Minutemen are trying to ensure themselves a spot in the 12-team tournament field and improve their seed.
Two of the teams below them in the standings - St. Bonaventure (3-8) and La Salle (3-8) - play each other Sunday in Philadelphia. Saint Joseph's (3-9), which is in 13th place, hosts Temple.
The two teams directly above UMass both could have their hands full. Duquesne (5-7) hosts Dayton (7-4) at 1 p.m. Sunday, while George Washington (4-7) is at Richmond (10-2) at 7 p.m. Saturday.

MHERST, Mass. - Key runs by the visiting team midway through each half were the difference on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center as UMass fell to Saint Louis, 69-56. The Billikens used a 13-0 run in the first half and a 12-2 run in the second as they improved to 18-8 overall and 9-3 in the A-10. UMass fell to 10-17 overall and 4-9 in conference play.
Ricky Harris led all scorers with 23 points on 9-for-18 shooting. Terrell Vinson had his highest scoring game since a career-high 21 vs. Memphis on Dc. 19, with 19 while also grabbing eight rebounds. Saint Louis put four scorers in double figures, led by Kyle Cassity with 16 and Cody Ellis with 14.
UMass shot 39 percent for the game, including 18 percent from 3-point range. SLU was 48 percent overall and 39 percent from long range. The Minutemen held a 33-30 edge on the boards.
The game started out a tight affair as the teams traded hoops over the first seven minutes, but with UMass leading, 13-11, the Billikens went on a 13-0 run over the middle portion of the first half to take a 24-13 lead with 9:12 left. SLU shot 10-for-14 up to that point, including three 3-pointers by Ellis, and held the Minutemen scoreless for 5:45.
The Billikens led, 26-15, with under six minutes left in the first half when Harris, who had just two points to that point, took over. The senior guard scored 11 points in a 14-4 UMass run over the final 5:16 to head into halftime down a point, 30-29.
Harris' 13 points led UMass in the first half and Vinson added seven points and five rebounds while the Minutemen shot 41 percent. SLU was led by 11 points from Cassity and nine from Ellis while the team shot 50 percent in the half.
The second half started much like the first, with the teams trading hoops. The Minutemen tied the game twice in the opening four minutes of the half and trailed by one when Saint Louis went on another mid-half run. This time it was a 12-2 run that spanned 4:53 and gave the Billikens a 54-43 lead with nine minutes left in the game.
After the deficit reached 12 on a Cassity 3-pointer with 8:13 left, UMass was able to cut the SLU lead to eight on an Anthony Gurley 3-pointer with 7:51 left.
With three games remaining in the regular season, the Minutemen hit the road for a pair, at Dayton on Saturday at 7 p.m. and at La Salle on March 3 at 7 p.m., before returning to the Mullins Center on March 6 for a 4 p.m. tip against Rhode Island on Senior Day.

Head Coach Derek Kellogg's Opening Statement
Well that was a tough game to play and coach and probably watch. They did a great job in controlling the tempo on both ends of the floor. Defensively they made us take tough shots; offensively they moved the ball and wore us down. They set a lot of ball screens and they really took advantage of our young guys on occasion. It was a tough game for our team and our style, but one that I thought if we played a little smarter and a little tougher we might have been able to come out with the win, but unfortunately that's not the case. That's a team that for some reason has found a way to win a ton of close games this year. They are figuring out a way to win with a pretty good team.
Coach Kellogg on how to stop St. Louis' patient offense
Well I was hoping we could score and make them have to play a little faster. When the tempo was picked up in the first half we were fortunate enough to cut it to one at the end of the half. You have to be tough, get over screens and make them take tough shots. We made some mistakes and they made us pay dearly.
Coach Kellogg on the momentum shift after Reed's tip with 1 second on the shot clock
That was a well designed play for them where they just threw it about as high as you can and he did a good job of getting it in. We had played great defense up until that point so that was a big momentum changer.
Coach Kellogg on having only two consistent scorers
It is difficult; we are looking for a third or fourth option every game. Ricky has been the one guy we can continuously rely on. Anthony has done it in spurts, Vinson has done it in spurts and Freddie has done it on occasion. When you are relying on a freshman to be that second and third guy its hard. Anthony is the guy we need to become a little more consistent and do that.
Coach Kellogg on Sampson Carter's performance
I thought Sampson played well at times; he still gets tired too fast. I think he is playing too much so when the game gets moving he gets tired a little quickly and there are some mental mistakes that come with that. But I thought he did well, he is going to continue to play more as the season goes on.
Coach Kellogg on Terrell Vinson becoming more assertive on offense
I thought he was great. I probably should have gotten him the ball even more tonight. He went for 19 and 8, but there were a few plays that he got over-powered physically and missed some point blank shots.
Coach Kellogg on the last couple weeks of the season
I am probably going to sleep on whether to push them even harder or back off a little bit and give them some rest. I always think back to when I was a player or an assistant coach. This time of year you want to make sure they are mentally and physically still into the season and ready to go; and these guys have been. However, I also know that when you are playing a lot of freshman and first year guys and they are playing a lot of minutes and the season is starting to drag on, they hit a wall at some point. I don't want this team to hit a wall, and I have to make sure we fight through any fatigue and make sure they get enough rest.
Ricky Harris on Saint Louis's toughness
I'd say they're a well coached team. Their defense was on of the best we've seen all year. They help each other, and they are one of the best teams we've played.
Terrell Vinson on trying to be more aggressive
Yeah, Ricky and I were trying to get their big men in foul trouble, so they wouldn't be able to affect the game as much.
Ricky Harris on taking steps backwards since last week
I'd say we have, we had two big wins a couple weeks ago and we let that get away from us. I think we got complacent, and let off the pedal a little bit. We have to start coming out and winning games, because we are not as talented as a lot of other teams in the league. We need to execute differently so we can win games, and I don't think that is the way it's going right now.
Terrell Vinson on pulling out of double digit deficit, and then falling right back in
Yeah, its frustrating ... there were a couple of three's we have up, that let them get ahead again.
Terrell Vinson on Reed's tip in shot with one second left on shot clock
They collapsed on our defense, and we shouldn't have given it up. I'm not sure what happened.
Ricky Harris on not having Javorn Farrell for today's game
Yeah, not having him today was tough. He's a big part of the team, our junk-yard dog. I wouldn't say he's the reason that we lost though.
Saint Louis Coach Rick Majerus on Willie Reed's alley-oop in the second half:
You know what he did, and people love offense, I'm not criticizing you at all because that's what people love. Everyone regales Brees as a quarterback and very few people know the name of the left tackle or the center. Willie today, played really good defense. Block some shots, but you know he's weak, he's getting tougher, he can't get stronger until the off season, but he's playing with more determination. Conklin did a good job too, but obviously with one second left it's a play we have, we have to get a tip, we can't come down with the ball because we won't get a shot. That was a big play. 12 for 15 from the foul line might be a season high for us. We had 16 assists, I thought we did a good job limiting their threes. That's what we thought we had to do to win, limit their threes, limit their offensive rebounds, and I though we did that. I don't know how many offensive rebounds they had at half, second half they got three. We did a good job. Cody Ellis played good defense, and although Jordan made terrible mistakes offensively, he continued to defend. Remekun gave us a boost there with the two baskets he got. We needed all hands on deck, so it was a great win for us.
Majerus on Reed handling the physicality of the game:
I thought he did a pretty good job, it was more of a physical game and he did a pretty good job, Conklin's more of a physical player. That five is a talented guy, we played a lot of different guys through him. We made a special emphasis on him, you wouldn't have thought it, the kid got 23 points. He's a real load. What I liked is Kwamain jumped in there and wanted him. I thought our defense, we had 16 assists and 12 turnovers and we hit 12 for 15 from the free throw line, where we usually hit 7 for 15.
nother solid performance by guard Ricky Harris did little to offset Saint Louis, as it shrugged off a first-half scare by the Massachusetts mens basketball team to win, 69-56.
After scoring less than 20 points for the first time since UMass played Baylor on Jan. 23, the senior finished with a game-high 23 points. But the Minutemen (10-17, 4-9 Atlantic 10) defense couldnt stop the Billikens from having four players in double-figures.
SLUs Kyle Cassity (16 points) led his team in scoring with 5-of-8 shooting while forward Willie Reed added 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting. A particular play Reed made shifted the momentum toward the Billikens, according to UMass coach Derek Kellogg.
They had a three-point lead with 12 minutes, 56 seconds left in the game as he tipped in a shot with one second left on the shot clock. SLU (18-8, 9-3 A-10) eventually built its lead to 13 points.
That was a good designed play by them where they just threw it about as high as you can and he did a nice job of getting it in, Kellogg said. We had played great defense up until that point, so that was definitely a momentum changer.
The Billikens finished the game with 48.1 percent shooting from the field and 39.3 percent from 3-point range. However, Kellogg said it was their defense that was the deciding factor in his teams loss.
The Minutemen had their second lowest point total of the season and their first time scoring less than 60 points in all of February. UMass worse offensive night was against the Bears, who at the time were ranked 25th in the nation.
Coach [Rick] Majeruss teams have always played good defense, Kellogg said. They chest you up and they play physical and you have to make a physical, tough play to get a basket.
UMass hoped to take advantage of what Majerus called, the youngest team in the nation when it went on a first-half run to cut the Billikens double-digit lead to one point.
The Minutemen were up 13-11 with 13:07 left in the first half until SLU went on a 13-0 run with two 3-pointers from Ellis Cody. With 7:22 left in the half, freshman Terrell Vinson finally stopped St. Louiss run on a lay-up.
UMass eventually caught up to the Billikens in the last 5:30 with a 14-4 run to end the half down 30-29. The last time the Minutemen got that close was when they were down 42-41 just over five minutes into the second half.
I dont want to say we got complacent, but we kind of let our foot off the petal a little bit, but we have got to start coming out in games more because were not as talented as a lot of teams in this conference, so theres a lot of stuff that we have got to do differently, Harris said.
UMass now has a week off before heading to Ohio on Saturday to face Dayton, who just lost its fifth game of the A-10 schedule to Duquesne yesterday. Kellogg is hoping to use this long stretch to regroup the players and make sure his team, that started three freshmen against the Billikens, doesnt get burned out.
I know that when youre playing a lot of freshmen and first-year guys a lot of minutes and the season is starting to drag on, that they start hitting a wall and I dont want these guys to hit a wall, Kellogg said. I have got to make sure that we fight through any fatigue and also that they get enough rest.

he Massachusetts basketball team was forced to play without freshman guard Javorn Farrell in their 69-56 loss to Saint Louis Sunday evening.
Farrell was ejected early in the second half of the Minutemens 66-60 defeat to George Washington last Wednesday for hitting a GW player.
According to NCAA rules, if a player is ejected from a game, they are automatically suspended for the next contest.
Hes one of our tough guys, we call him junkyard dog, and not having him today was tough, senior guard Ricky Harris said.
Hes a big part of this team, but we had to play without him, but I wouldnt say hes the reason we lost the game, he wouldve given us about seven rebounds though.
Farrell, known primarily for his tough defensive play, has seen more time as of late, starting the past six games in a row before Sundays game at the guard position, with the loss of point guard David Gibbs to a broken foot.
On the defensive side of the ball, Farrell has guarded some of UMass (10-17, 4-9 Atlantic 10) opponents best offensive players, such as Charlottes Shamari Spears and Xaviers Jordan Crawford.
In those games, Farrell scored a career-high 12 points against the Musketeers and had a career-high four steals against the 49ers, with both games resulting in losses for the Minutemen.
This season, he has played in 23 games, including 16 off the bench, averaging 4.2 points per game and 3.6 rebounds per game in 15.9 minutes, and was not even in the Mullins Center to watch his team take on the Billikens.
SLU (18-8, 9-3 A-10) grabbed 30 rebounds and had 14 second-chance points against the Minutemen, while guard Kyle Cassity had 16 points for the Billikens.
I would say that hurt us a little bit, UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. Not that the win or loss wouldve changed, but that was a game he would play well in because when they kind of play the wings tight, you have to be able to dribble the ball into the paint and be strong, and I think defensively, he wouldve helped us some, but is he worth 12, 13 points? Im not sure.
In Farrells place, Kellogg started freshman forward Sampson Carter against the Billikens. Carter finished with four points, six rebounds and two blocks in 24 minutes.
I thought Sampson played pretty well at times, Kellogg said. He still gets tired too fast, and I think when the game gets moving, he gets tired a little bit quickly and there are some mental mistakes that go into it.
Carter has played in 23 games this season, starting the first six games and averages 4.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in 15.4 minutes per game.
I thought he did well, and he will continue to play more as the season goes on, and set the table for him for his career here, and Im looking for him to continue to step up.
Kellogg wants both players to contribute defensively and to play more physically in order to help the Minutemen in games.
He played a little tougher, had a couple loose rebounds and loose balls, Kellogg said. He needs to play like Javorn plays, but be 6-foot-8 and do that.
Farrell should be available when the Minutemen head to Dayton on Saturday.

MHERST - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team erased a double-digit lead by Saint Louis in the first half on Sunday, but could not do it again in the second half.
The Billikens defeated the Minutemen 69-56 before 3,454 fans at the Mullins Center.
UMass, which has made a habit in recent weeks of falling behind by large margins and making runs to get close, pulled even after an early 11-point deficit, but could not muster another comeback against the Billikens' defense in the second half.
"Their defense is probably one of the best defenses we've seen all year," said Minutemen senior Ricky Harris.
UMass got 75 percent of its points from just two players. Harris had 23 points, while Terrell Vinson added 19 points and eight rebounds. The rest of the team scored just 14 points.
"We're looking for a third and fourth option every game and a fifth option would be nice," UMass coach Derek Kellogg said. "Ricky has been the guy we can really rely on.
"Anthony (Gurley) and Terrell have done it in spurts and Freddie (Riley) has done it on occasion," Kellogg added. "But it's tough to rely on freshman. Anthony (five points) needs to be the guy to be a little more consistent."
The loss dropped the Minutemen (10-17, 4-9 Atlantic 10) into 11th place in the conference, while Saint Louis (18-8, 9-3 A-10) solidified its hold on fourth.
UMass is at Dayton at 7 p.m. Saturday.
"That was a tough game to play in, coach and probably watch," Kellogg said. "They did a great job of controlling tempo on both ends of the floor. Saint Louis has found a way to win a ton of close games this year with a pretty good team. We made some mistakes and they made us pay dearly."
Neither team led by more than three for the first eight minutes of the game, but after a time-out with 11 minutes, 46 seconds left, the Billikens grabbed control by scoring 13 straight points to take a 24-13 lead with 9:12 remaining.
Harris, who struggled in the second half of Wednesday's 66-60 loss to George Washington and at the beginning of Sunday's game, caught fire. He scored 11 points as the Minutemen closed the half on a 14-4 run and trailed by just 30-29 at the break.
UMass drew even at 37-37 just over three minutes into the second half on a layup by Vinson. The game stayed within one possession until Willie Reed gave the Billikens momentum for good. The Minutemen, who had increased their defensive intensity, were down 44-41 and tipped the ball out of bounds with the shot clock at one.
But Kyle Cassity lofted an inbounds pass from under the basket to Reed, who was able to tip it in.
"That was a good designed play by them," Kellogg said. "That was definitely a momentum changer."
At the other end, Reed blocked a Sampson Carter shot inside and the Minutemen never got closer than five points again as the Billikens pulled away from there.
Reed finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots to lead Saint Louis. Cassity scored 16 points, and Cody Ellis added 14.
Harris was frustrated.
"We had two big wins and we could have had a win at GW and let that get away from us," Harris said. "I won't say we got complacent, but we have to come out and start working more because we're not as talented as a lot of teams in this conference."

MHERST - With six days off until the next game, University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Derek Kellogg said he's not sure whether he needs to push his team harder or let up a little bit with three games remaining in the regular season.
"I'm going to sleep on it a bit tonight," Kellogg said after Sunday's 69-56 loss to Saint Louis. "Do I need to push them even harder or do I need to back off a little bit, give them some rest to get their minds right?
"This time of year you want to make sure they're still into the season and ready to go and they have been," he added. "But when you're playing a lot of freshmen and first-year guys and the season starts to drag on, they hit a wall a little bit. I don't want this team to hit a wall."
Kellogg said he is glad to have the week off.
"It's a great week to have off," he said. "I would have preferred to be coming off a win so we could feel good about ourselves for a week, but it's also nice to have them on edge a little bit to get ready for Dayton next weekend."
SAMPSON STARTER - With Javorn Farrell serving a one-game suspension, freshman Sampson Carter drew his seventh career start. He scored the first basket of the game for UMass, but was quiet after that and finished with four points in 24 minutes.
"Not having Javorn hurt us a little bit, not that the win or loss would have changed," Kellogg said. "I thought Sampson played pretty well at times. He still gets tired too fast.
"He's going to continue to play more as the season goes on to set the table for his career here," Kellogg added. "He played a little tougher, got a couple loose balls and loose rebounds."
INTENTIONAL FOULS - After Farrell was suspended because he received a technical foul for throwing a punch at a George Washington player on Wednesday, both Hashim "Big City" Bailey and Terrell Vinson were called for intentional fouls against the Billikens.
NEXT UP - The Minutemen are off until Saturday when they travel to Dayton to take on the Flyers at 7 p.m. Dayton (18-8, 7-5 Atlantic 10) is reeling after falling at Duquesne 73-71 on Sunday.
FRESHMEN SCORING - Freshmen accounted for 50 of the 125 points scored in the UMass game as Saint Louis played five rookies along with the Minutemen's three.
MISCELLANEOUS - UMass is technically eliminated from consideration for the National Invitation Tournament as the only way the 10-17 Minutemen can reach .500 is to win all three of their remaining regular-season games and the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Bailey drew his team-leading sixth charge of the season.
