MHERST - It's almost become a rite of passage for new University of Massachusetts men's basketball coaches.
Before Travis Ford ever coached a regular-season game at UMass, he first had to tangle with Dowling College in an exhibition game.
Tonight at 7 at the Mullins Center, Derek Kellogg will renew the rivalry and continue the tradition with the Golden Lions in the Minutemen's only exhibition game before opening the regular season Tuesday.
While tonight's game does not count in any standings, it will give fans their first look at Kellogg and his dribble-drive motion offense and Minutemen freshmen Tyrell Lynch, Travon Wilcher and David Gibbs as well as Wake Forest transfer sophomore Anthony Gurley.
Dowling struggled a year ago finishing 9-19, but after losing its first 11 games they went 9-8 down the stretch.
Like most exhibition opponents, the Lions are lacking in size with only two players 6-foot-7 or taller - seldom-used 6-9 reserve Alioune Ndiaye and 6-7 freshman Elon Howard.
Junior point guard David Seagers led Dowling and was among the leaders in the East Coast Conference last year in scoring (19.4 points per game), assists (3.62) and steals (2.31).
Tonight is the only exhibition game for UMass which chose to have a closed scrimmage against Rutgers Saturday instead of a second exhibition. While NCAA rules prohibit schools from releasing any statistics from those scrimmages, Kellogg said he was pleased at his team's showing.
"We played well. The thing I'm most proud of is that we competed. It looked like we tried to buy in to my philosophy. We have to continue to get better," Kellogg said. "The guys realized my philosophy as a coach can work if you run it right on the offensive end. Overall we had a pretty good performance."
However, Kellogg said he is concerned about his team's conditioning.
"At some point it looked like we started to run out of gas," he said. "We're not quite in game shape yet and we're definitely not in game shape yet for how I want to play, which is attacking at both ends of the floor."
Kellogg said he hopes to see improvement from Saturday to tonight.
"I'm hoping they've made strides defensively," he said. "When the lights go on and there are actually fans in the seats, who are the guys who actually step up and play? That's what I'm really interested to see."
Senior big man Luke Bonner said he is just anxious to play in game conditions.
"I'm excited to play someone that's not my team, a game with a scoreboard, that's sort of for real," he said.
oday's game against Dowling isn't going to mean anything for the Massachusetts men's basketball team's strength of schedule. In fact, it isn't going to count for the regular season, either.
Where it does count is in how each player steps up to the challenge of playing against someone other than themselves.
With a bench as short as the Minutemen's, UMass coach Derek Kellogg expects to go with his starting line-up for much of the game, but he will not hesitate to take them out of the game if he sees an effort that he considers unsatisfactory.
"The greatest thing that I'm looking at is when the game lights go on, which guys step up and play better and which guys take a back seat," Kellogg said.
Kellogg will look for returning starters Chris Lowe and Ricky Harris to prove once again that they can lead the team and hopes to have them play 30 minutes against the Golden Lions (7-16, 6-10 East Coast Conference 2007-08).
Dowling qualified for the ECC tournament after squeaking out a 70-65 win over Queens on March 1. The Golden Lions lost their first round match to No. 1 C.W. Post, 83-64, on March 5.
They will have a very challenging exhibition against a much more competitive UMass team that qualified for the National Invitation Tournament championship last season.
Lowe and Harris are expected to compete at a high level against Dowling, but have already proven themselves based on last season's performance.
Harris was second on the team in scoring last season (18.2 points per game) while Lowe received praise from across the country as one of the best guards in the Atlantic 10.
Kellogg will look for redshirt seniors Luke Bonner and Tony Gaffney to make up for the interior presence lost with Etienne Brower and Dante Milligan graduating. The forwards will have plenty of opportunities to showcase their talent against an undersized Dowling squad.
Forward Alioune Ndiaye is the Golden Lion's tallest player and one of two who are above 6-foot-6. He averaged 1.6 ppg and 2.3 rebounds per game, but was second on the team in blocks (12).
He will likely have the duty of guarding the 7'1" Bonner, whose stats aren't too flashy either (3.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg), but is fundamentally sound and has a hook-shot in the post that can be difficult to block for smaller players.
Josh Lowe (6'6") won't have too much of a height disadvantage against Gaffney (6'8"), but as one of the more athletic players for the Minutemen (25-11, 10-6 A-10 2007-08), will make rebounding a tough task for Josh, who didn't even play for half of the season.
When he did play, he averaged 2.1 rebounds, but has decent range for a forward as he leads the team in 3-point shooting (.382 percent).
However, since today is an exhibition game and the Minutemen are not playing Division I competition, Kellogg is primarily focused on how his team plays and won't focus too much on the score.
"I'm totally focused on our squad. I'm trying to get us better," Kellogg said. "I'm trying to get to where I feel comfortable where I feel like we can go out and play a game 40 minutes."
Following this game, UMass will have some more practice time before it officially opens its season in Carbondale, Ill., against Arkansas-Monticello for the first round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
The home opener will be at the end of the month on Nov. 24 against Jacksonville State.

MHERST, Mass. - With many new faces taking the court in Wednesday night's men's basketball exhibition game at the Mullins Center, it was two veterans leading the way for the Minutemen as Chris Lowe scored 21 points and Ricky Harris had 20 in UMass' 91-87 victory over Dowling. Anthony Gurley added 17 points and six rebounds in his debut in front of the Mullins Center fans. David Seagers led the way for Downing with 32 points, 25 of which came in the first half.
The Minutemen open the regular season on Tues, Nov. 11 in Carbondale, Ill. in the first round of the 2K Sports Classic against Arkansas-Monticello at 6 p.m.
The Minutemen, using head coach Derek Kellogg's new dribble-drive offense, jumped out to an early lead. 3-pointers on three-straight possessions, one by David Gibbs and two by Harris, gave UMass a 21-11 lead with 13:45 left in the first half.
After Dowling came back to tie the game at the 11:20 mark on a Seagers 3-pointer, the Minutemen went on a 12-0 run over a 3:40 stretch that included two Gary Correia 3-pointers to take a 35-23 lead with 7:06 left in the half. Seagers led another Golden Lions run to pull them within four, 52-48, at halftime.
Seagers led all scorers in the first half, pouring in 25 points on 11-for-17 shooting. Harris and Lowe led the Minutemen with 11 points each as UMass shot 7-for-14 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes. Both teams shot identical 20-for-35 (57.1%) marks from the field.
UMass' defense started creating opportunities early in the second half. Tony Gaffney's long outlet pass leading to a Harris dunk at the 17:32 mark capped off a 11-1 Minutemen run to start the second half, extending the lead to 14, 63-49.
Tyrell Lynch's first bucket of the game gave the Minutemen their biggest lead, 68-51, at the 16:24 mark, but the Golden Lions came back again. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Dowling cut the lead to six at the 10:24 mark. A jumper by Beijon Warrington then cut the lead to one, 76-75, with just over seven minutes left.
A 3-point play by Lowe with 3:21 put UMass back up by six, 86-80. After a Seagers 3-pointer and Jones basket that cut the lead to three with 1:51 left, Lowe scored on another drive into the lane to make it a 90-85 game with 1:34 to go. Seagers scored once more, with 58 seconds left, but the UMass defense was able to make stops in the final minute to preserve the victory.
For the game, UMass outshot Dowling, 52.3% (34-65) to 50.7% (36-71). From 3-point range, the Minutemen shot 36% (9-25), while Dowling shot 45% (9-20). The Golden Lions held a slight edge on the glass, 38-37.
Coach Kellogg's general comments
I am a little bit angry that after preaching defense for the last month, we came out and gave up 87 points. I did not know if our focus was totally on the defensive end of the floor. The strangest thing was that our players think that they did some good things, and I'm not discounting that offensively. We scored baskets and made some plays, but when you get up 13, 15 on a couple of different occasions, that is when you should put teams away and go up by 20 or more. The only way you do that is by locking down on the defensive end of the floor and making some more baskets.
Coach Kellogg on Dowling
I thought that team came and played their heart out. They worked harder than us, which as a coach really makes me mad. When you look at the board in our locker room, it says UMass Basketball, intensity, enthusiasm, passion. No one walks into the Mullins Center and out plays you. Quite honestly that team out worked us and out played us. As a coaching staff we have to do a better job of coaching transition defense, where we sprint back and match up. Then we need to work on our shell defense. Overall, I give their coaching staff credit, but we have some things we can work on.
Tony Gaffney on the game
This is an exhibition game; hopefully we have 37 more games this season. With that, you have to give them a lot of credit and we know we need to step our defense up, giving up 85 points and 32 to one person is unacceptable
Tony Gaffney on the team's reaction to the game
They are upset with the outcome but like us they realize that this is a long season and we're still learning how to play together and learning to trust one another on the defensive end. We took a lot of positives out of that game and we're going to have to get back into the gym tomorrow and get better every single day.
Tony Gaffney on team chemistry
We are going to have to learn to trust each other on the defensive end. We need to be able to get up on our man and know that we have four other guys behind that are ready to help. This is a long season, and we're going to learn and never give up 85 points again. That's not acceptable. The positive is that we got the first game out of the way, we can move forward and go back to practice
Chris Lowe on the outcome of the game
There's nothing to be happy about, we let a team come in here and score 85 points in our own place. We have to get back to the gym and buy into the system. If we want to win, we have to buy into what Coach Kellogg is saying and know what it takes. He has been to the National Championship game as a player and as a coach. We just need to buy in. This is unacceptable. Tony, Luke, and I are seniors and we have to provide better leadership. It starts with me because I'm the point guard. I think I am cheating my teammates if I don't go as hard as I can, starting from the tip.
Dowling Head Coach Steve Hayn's general comments
This was a great opportunity for us to get in front of a really good program and test ourselves. We have had some interesting things happen with our program as we have progressed. David Seagers, a junior, is someone we are very proud of. Everyone on this team, in general, has done a really nice job day-by-day in putting the program ahead of themselves. David is a great example of that. We had some young players step up tonight. We are trying to do some new things with this program. We are just appreciative to be here and have the opportunity to be here.
Coach Hayn on what he gets out of this game
This game is encouraging and I think when we went a little smaller, with four perimeter players, I think we got the idea that that is the way we are going to play this year. There has been a big emphasis with our guys to block out and be aggressive and get to the ball. I'm not surprised. We have some tough kids that are determined and hard-working. Certainly, I am proud, more proud than surprised.
David Seagers on whether he was surprised by outcome
I am really happy for this opportunity and I'm not surprised because I think we have a lot of guys that can play on our team. They put their socks on one at a time like everyone else, and they put their shorts on one leg at a time. I'm proud of this team.
MHERST - With less than a week before the University of Massachusetts season opener against Arkansas-Monticello next Tuesday, the Minutemen have plenty to work on after barely winning their exhibition game Wednesday night.
UMass squeaked past Dowling 91-87.
Derek Kellogg, who was coaching his first game for the Minutemen at the Mullins Center, had a long list of things that frustrated him, perhaps none bigger than his team's defense.
"I'm a little bit angry that after preaching defense for the last month that we came out and gave up 87 points," Kellogg said. "I don't know if our focus was totally on defense."
UMass led by 17 early in the second half at 68-51, but could not finish off the Golden Lions.
"That's when your supposed to put teams away," Kellogg said. "The only way you do that is by locking down on defense and building the lead up to 20 or 25... If you get up like that in the second half it's inexcusable to let a team back in the game."
Senior Chris Lowe put the blame on himself.
"There's nothing to be happy about," said Lowe who had 21 points and eights assists. "We let a team come in and score 87 points. We need to get back into the gym and buy into the system ... It starts with me. I'm the point guard. I should be dominating the game from the tip. If I'm leading this team we'll be good. If I ain't leading this team, we're going to be mediocre."
Kellogg agreed with him.
"I thought Chris Lowe did a great job taking the game over down the stretch, but I wanted him to dominate the whole game," Kellogg said. "He's capable of being one of the best point guards in not only the Atlantic 10, but the entire country."
EIGHT-MAN ROTATION - Kellogg said he'd eventually like to have a rotation that goes nine or 10 deep, but last night gave significant minutes to only eight players - starters Luke Bonner, Tony Gaffney, Anthony Gurley, Ricky Harris and Lowe and reserves David Gibbs, Gary Correia and Tyrell Lynch.
Matt Hill played three minutes and Matt Glass just two. Freshman Travon Wilcher, who was injured in the team's scrimmage with Rutgers Saturday, did not play at all.
"I'd like it to be nine or 10. I'd like to see what Matt Hill and Matt Glass can give us, but I wasn't comfortable with the game being as tight as it was," Kellogg said.
REBOUNDING WOES - The Minutemen struggled on the boards last year and after losing Dante Milligan, Gary Forbes and Etienne Brower, the team's top three rebounders, it does not appear to be getting better. Dowling exposed the problem by outrebounding UMass 38-37.
"It was a rude awakening, Our guards are going to have to rebound like they've never rebounded before," said Gaffney, who had six. "Our bigs are going to have to outwork opponents, because we're not going to overwhelm anyone."
Bonner led the Minutemen with eight rebounds, but Kellogg expressed frustration with him.
"I expected more from Luke Bonner than he gave us tonight," Kellogg said.
NEWCOMERS GET MIXED REVIEWS - Gibbs had eight points, six rebounds and three assists in his first UMass performance and drew praise from Kellogg.
"The point differential went in the favor of UMass when he was in the game and in the other direction when he was out," Kellogg said. "That gives you an indication of where he is as a basketball player. He hasn't scratched the surface, but when he goes in there, good things happen."
Lynch, who the Minutemen are counting on to be a big part of a thin frontcourt, had four points and two rebounds in 11 minutes.
"We're going to need him to become a man and be a monster at some point during the season," Kellogg said. "I'm not sure he's ready yet physically, But he has to play and he has to give us something because we're very thin up front."
Gurley, a sophomore transfer from Wake Forest had 17 points, but Kellogg wanted a better all-around game from him.
"Gurley was outstanding on the offensive end of the floor, but I'm looking for him to physically be a man," Kellogg said. "He has to rebound, be our best defender and put up 17 a night like he did tonight. It was a full game offensively, but he didn't do all the things I expect out of him."
ypically, the purpose of an exhibition game is to get a team prepared for the regular season by beating-up on an inferior opponent while continuing to work on things it tried in practice.
However, if the scheduled opponent doesn't know it is supposed to lose, the favored team could find itself in serious trouble of being embarrassed.
The Massachusetts men's basketball team barely escaped a serious challenge by Division II Dowling College with a 91-87 victory. Dowling missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with 10 seconds left in the game and UMass hit a free throw at the end to prevent UMass coach Derek Kellogg's debut from being a disappointment.
Still Kellogg saw the unexpected challenge as a positive because it could give the team a wake-up call.
"I thought [the challenge] was great, I really did. That team came and played their hearts out. They actually worked harder than us and as a coach that's what really makes me mad," Kellogg said.
Kellogg came in as the new coach with a new offensive scheme, but really wanted to make UMass become known as a program with one of the best defenses around. Allowing 87 points to a Division II school, including a game-high 32 points by Golden Lion guard David Seagers, was a serious concern to everyone involved with the Minutemen.
"It's coach Kellogg's first game, it's our first game as a team; you know we're still learning," forward Tony Gaffney said. "It's not a sprint, it's a marathon and we hopefully have 37 more games this season. With that said, you have to give them a lot of credit and we have to step up our defense a little bit. Giving up [87] points and 32 to one individual is not acceptable."
Gaffney finished with 10 points, six rebounds and five steals.
Starting point guard Chris Lowe, who led the Minutemen with 21 points and eight assists, was not pleased at all with the result.
"There's nothing to be happy about. What's to be happy about?" Lowe said. "We let a team come in here and put up 87 points. We have to get back to the gym and buy into [Kellogg's] system."
In the first half of the game, it was immediately apparent that Dowling did not travel to Amherst to be pushed around. They were about even on the scoreboard with UMass for the first 10 minutes of the half.
UMass held a 28-25 lead with nine minutes left, and it seemed like the Minutemen where going to put the game away when they opened up a 40-27 lead with five minutes remaining. But the Golden Lions refused to go away, cutting the lead to 52-48 at the half.
The Minutemen came out of halftime with renewed energy and quickly pulled their way to a 17 point lead at the 16-minute mark. But UMass went cold again and the Golden Lions cut the lead to 76-75 with seven minutes to play.
"When you get up by 13, 15 points at a couple different occasions that's when you're supposed to put teams away, and go up by 20-25," Kellogg said. "And the only way to do that is by clamping down on the defensive end of the floor and then coming back and making plays on the other end."
The Minutemen avoided embarrassment primarily due to the efforts of team captain Chris Lowe, who took over with two minutes left in the game by driving to the basket and making lay-ups with the game on the line.
Holding on to a 90-87 lead with 10 seconds to go, Seager missed a potentially game tying three-pointer; Gurley grabbed the rebound and hit a free throw to seal the game.
What new system?
One of the most talked about attributes of Kellogg was that he was going to bring a new offensive system known as the dribble-drive motion offense. In that offense, the guards are expected drive past whoever defends them, while everyone else moves to the vacated area on the floor.
However, the Minutemen did not get a chance to practice with the new system as Dowling played zone defense and forced the Minutemen to abandon the tactic. Kellogg noted the team did not have a chance to get much practice against a zone defense so he went with a more conventional attack.
"We hadn't really worked on our zone offense," Lowe said. "But the season is here and teams are going to watch us on tape and probably say 'play zone' so we are really going emphasize [playing against] zones."
Fresh faces
For the Minutemen to be successful this season they need major contributions from their returning stars and need the newer players to step up. Redshirt sophomore Anthony Gurley could be the most important newcomer to the Minutemen as he has been inserted in the starting line-up in his first year of eligibility for UMass.
As a transfer from Wake Forest last year, Gurley had never played in a UMass uniform before tonight, but has become the third man in the Minutemen's three guard offense, alongside Ricky Harris and Lowe. He does not specialize in either passing or shooting, but is adept at doing what the team needs at the time.
Gurley finished with 17 points and five rebounds.
David Gibbs is another newcomer that Kellogg expects to be a quality player for the team. The freshman from Connecticut is an energetic guard with good speed who will provide chances for the starting three guards to take a breather.
Gibbs scored eight points, and showed surprisingly good rebounding ability for a guard finishing with six rebounds, good for second on the team.
Tyrell Lynch is the third new player who will see time on the floor for the Minutemen. He is a big six-foot-nine forward on a team without a great deal of size so Kellogg needs him to mature quickly.
"We are going to need him to become a man, a monster at some point during the season. I'm not sure he's ready yet physically, and as he continues to get in better shape I think we are going to see more of him," Kellogg said.
